Overnight, a historic theater in Central Florida was destroyed by fire.
When firefighters arrived at the Flagler Playhouse at around ten o’clock on Sunday night, they found a fire near the rear of the structure and a lot of smoke coming from the room’s eaves.
The attic space rapidly became inundated with flames.
The fire was fought by firefighters from Flagler Beach Fire Department, Palm Coast Fire Department, Flagler County Fire Rescue, and Ormond Beach Fire Department Station 92.
According to Flagler County Fire Marshal Jerry Smith, they had to battle the building from the outside because they were afraid it would fall on the firefighters if they stayed inside.
“It’s all wood building inside, very hot fire, extremely hazardous for the guys, particularly since it’s been added on to various construction types, it simply rendered it a big maze inside for us,” he stated.
About six hours before the fire occurred, the final occupants of the building left, and nobody was harmed.
First Baptist Bunnell was housed in the Flagler Playhouse, which was built in 1957.
“The Play That Goes Wrong,” a new production, was scheduled to premiere this week.
