Impact of Idalia in N.C.: two potential tornadoes, 35,000 without power, and over 80 roads closed because of flooding

According to a news release from the state today, Idalia has caused some localized flooding, felled trees, and power outages in North Carolina.

Two “possible tornadoes” were reported in Brunswick and New Hanover Counties, 2 to 6 inches of rain fell in eastern North Carolina, schools were closed, and 79 highways were stopped because of flooding, according to the state Department of Public Safety and Governor Roy Cooper.

35,000 people were left without electricity throughout the state at its worst. According to the announcement, there were slightly more than 14,000 outages as of 11 a.m.

The governor cautioned that flash flooding might occur as long as the state is threatened by more rain.

Cooper added, “I appreciate everyone stepping up to take precautions, but there’s still a chance of severe rain, strong winds, and storm surge, especially in eastern North Carolina. It’s crucial that people avoid flooded roadways and keep paying attention to local authorities.
