A California teacher is shown in social media video continuously using the n-word in class as she tries to encourage a kid to repeat the racist term after her.
The video, which was taken at Sequoia Middle School in Fontana, was posted on Facebook.
The kid is instructed to speak the slur by an unnamed female instructor who also says, “You asked me how to spell it, so go ahead and pronounce it.” The instructor repeats the term.
She repeats the slur twice more, instructing the learner to “pronounce it after me.”
When the video was shot is unclear.
The Fontana Unified School District’s Miki R. Inbody, the district’s superintendent of schools, described the incident as a “unfortunate conversation” between the instructor and the youngster. That happened “in regard to its utilization in a historical literary work,” she said.
According to KABC of Los Angeles, students claimed they were reading a Mark Twain book when a classmate enquired about how to spell the n-word.
Inbody stated in a statement on the district website, “Fontana Unified School District is happy to serve a diverse community and is sincerely dedicated to providing safe, inclusive learning environments where all children may achieve their best potential.”
As a District, we take such incidents very seriously, and we are dedicated to making sure that our learning environment is welcoming and inclusive of all children, said the superintendent. We are sensitive of the potential hurt and upset that such incidents might cause, particularly for students from diverse backgrounds. We want to reassure you that we do not allow any kind of bias or discrimination at our school and that we are taking action to resolve this problem and stop other occurrences of this kind.”
The teacher was not named by the district, and it is unknown if she has received any disciplinary measures. On Saturday, it was unable to reach district and school officials for comment right away.
Teachers, administrators, and other staff members will continue to get training and assistance, according to Inbody, “to ensure that they appreciate the significance of providing an inclusive and respectful learning environment.”
“We will also strive with our children to provide opportunities for honest and open dialogue about the consequences of words and conduct on others,” the statement said.
