Former presidential candidate Donald Trump‘s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, stated on Saturday that if Congress enacted a measure banning abortion on a federal level, Trump would veto it.

When asked about Republican senators like Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina who would support and see an abortion ban enacted by Trump on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Vance informed anchor Kristen Welker that Trump has “explicitly” stated he would veto a ban.

“You essentially have to veto it as president of the United States if you don’t support it,” Vance stated.

The former president has modified his views on abortion legislation throughout the years, and this is his most recent stance from the Trump campaign.

When asked in April on an Atlanta tarmac if he would sign a federal abortion ban if it made it through Congress, Trump said simply, “No.”

However, the former president was vague about what he meant by a “ban” at the time.

During his presidency in 2018, Trump urged the Senate to ratify a 20-week abortion ban that had already been approved by the House.

He applauded the Supreme Court’s ruling last year to reverse Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to an abortion.

“To everyone’s “astonishment,” I was able to kill Roe v. Wade after 50 years of failure and nobody even came close,” Trump wrote on social media in May 2023.

Even in March, Trump alluded to the possibility of a federal abortion ban lasting 15 weeks when he said, “Now that everyone is in agreement on 15, I’m thinking about it, and the result will be something extremely fair,” to a local radio host.

In the interview, Trump said, “However, it appears that many are in agreement that 15 weeks is a reasonable amount of timeā€”even conservatives are nodding in agreement.”
