After a depressing 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife Stadium on Monday night, the New York Jets—who are currently experiencing one of their worst offensive seasons in franchise history—started to lose steam.

The Jets’ top playmakers, running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, seemed irritated by the offense’s continued lackluster play. Wilson agreed that “we all have to grow up and do our job,” as stated by Hall.

In a quiet locker room, Wilson uttered the words, “It’s inexcusable, man, as well as it’s getting to a point where it’s disappointing.” “I detest having to send our defense back out there after a three-and-out when I walk off the field and look them in the eyes. My dogs, those lads, come outside and play ball. They really put us in a good spot. Man, it’s time for us to start paying it forward. It’s now. We must work things out.”

Against the NFL’s 31st-ranked pass defense, the Jets (4-4) were only able to muster two field goals, ending their three-game winning streak. They gave up eight sacks, lost three fumbles (two by quarterback Zach Wilson), and only converted three out of seventeen third downs. In the last 45 years, their third-down success percentage (22%) is the lowest in the NFL.

This was not a singular misstep. With just eight offensive touchdowns this season, the Jets are tied for the third-fewest in the team’s history after eight games.

When asked if the Jets’ problems are connected to the strategy, Garrett Wilson paused.

“I have no idea, man, I really have no idea,” he replied. “I like to think that isn’t the case; instead, it’s true things that we can simply watch the film and be like, ‘All right, we’re going to do this better so that will lead to a touchdown.'”

With quarterback Aaron Rodgers out on the fourth play of the season due to a torn Achilles tendon, the Jets had high hopes for their powerful offense in 2023. Zach Wilson, the previous No. 2 overall pick, entered the fray. Despite showing some progress in the past few weeks, he regressed on Monday night.

Although he completed 33 of a career-high 49 attempts for 263 yards, his stat line wasn’t particularly impressive. The offense struggled miserably in every manner possible as he failed to identify open receivers and misjudged pressure. It didn’t help that they had three pre-snap penalties. The Jets’ defense, which harassed Justin Herbert five times and limited him to a career-low 136 passing yards, was not enough to save them.

Robert Saleh, the coach, wouldn’t assign blame to his quarterback.

Did he play his finest game? Clearly not,” Saleh remarked. “Did he play his worst game? I won’t say that it was the worst game, though.

Wilson maintained he’s not the same quarterback who was benched twice in the previous season, despite having only guided the offense to eight touchdown drives, four of those being one-play drives.

“I feel like I’m a different player,” he stated. My mental state and comprehension of the game seem to be at their finest point right now. It’s so annoying that I feel prepared to compete and go out there, but I’m just not getting things done. It’s annoying, and I have to figure out how to start.”

The offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who joined the Jets from the Denver Broncos and finished 32nd in scoring last season, is the one he hopes to keep with, according to Saleh. Being so close to Hackett, Rodgers would not be amused by a change.

The Jets are 31st in terms of total yards per game and 30th in terms of points per contest right present.

“If you’re not upset, I believe there’s a problem,” stated Garrett Wilson, who fumbled in the first quarter, ending a possible scoring drive. “Although it’s disheartening and disturbs your mental state somewhat, it’s not beyond our control. As experts, we are. It will improve in the long run if we persevere through this. Of course, I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I claimed that we’re all happy with our performances on the pitch.

End of the tight When informed that their season total is just eight touchdowns, Tyler Conklin shook his head.

“I really don’t know whatever to say right now, to be entirely forthcoming with you,” he responded.
