Jill Biden, the first lady, had a positive Covid-19 test on Monday and the White House reported that she was having “mild symptoms.” Joe Biden, the current president, tested unfavorable.
The first lady’s plans to start teaching on Tuesday at Northern Virginia Community College for the fall semester have been derailed by the diagnosis. The school and she are collaborating to “ensure her classes are covered by a substitute,” according to Vanessa Valdivia, a spokesperson for the First Lady.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually when Dr. Biden, 72, lectures. He continues to do so at the family’s Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, home.
After receiving her diagnosis, Biden will be “monitored by the White House medical team” and will abide by their recommendations over when to return to the White House, according to Valdivia. Biden was scheduled to speak at a send-off event for the US team participating in the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, the following week in addition to starting school on Tuesday in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, but she will no longer do so, according to Valdivia.
There are currently no changes to the president’s itinerary or White House COvid procedures, an administration official told CNN on Monday.
The first lady’s diagnosis comes after a busy week for Joe Biden, who earlier in the day spoke in Philadelphia on Labor Day. Before leaving for the G20 Summit in India on Thursday, the president is slated to award the Medal of Honor to an Army captain during a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday.
CNN has requested more information regarding the frequency of the president and first lady’s COVID tests as well as if Joe Biden was present when his wife first started displaying COVID symptoms.
While on vacation in South Carolina in August of last year, the first lady tested positive for Covid-19. President Biden’s test result was positive in July. Shortly after receiving Paxlovid treatment, both suffered rebound cases.
After members of the entourage of Israeli President Isaac Herzog tested positive before a bilateral meeting, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters in July that everyone who meets with the president is still subject to a COVID-19 test before their meeting.
At the time, Jean-Pierre stated, “We have testing methods when – whenever anyone meets with the president. Therefore, I can confirm that everyone who meets with the president is tested. I do. Everyone does.
As the fourth viral season since the introduction of the coronavirus approaches, Jill Biden’s diagnosis coincides with increased awareness of COVID-19.
Early summer data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed a modest rise in hospital admissions, ER visits, and positive COVID-19 tests—although not by nearly the same amounts as in previous summers.
According to CDC standards, there were just approximately four new hospital admissions countrywide for every 100,000 individuals in the week ending August 19. High percentages of COVID-19 hospitalizations occurred in seven counties. However, 117 counties, or roughly 3.6% of the nation, fell under the medium level. Florida accounted for around a fourth of those counties.
Scientists are particularly interested in a new version called BA.2.86 since it has undergone extensive mutations, although it has only been found in a tiny number of individuals globally to date. However, given the virus’ unceasing evolution, “it doesn’t look good,” according to Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Translational Institute. The virus is “relentless” in its pursuit of new hosts and hosts it has already found to challenge.
