Two days after the fitness icon was discovered dead at his L.A. home, the Los Angeles Police Department announced on Monday that Richard Simmons‘s death is still under investigation pending a cause of death from the medical examiner.

On Saturday, the day after turning 76, Simmons passed away.

“Before we can formally close the case, we need the coroner’s office to rule on the final cause of death,” stated LAPD public information officer Norma Eisenman on Tuesday.

The testing results could not be received for up to six weeks.

Days before he passed away, Simmons expressed his gratitude for still being alive in an interview with People magazine.

“I’m happy to be here and to be alive for another day,” he stated. “I’ll help people, which is what I do every day, on my birthday.”

“I never considered myself to be a famous person,” he added. People are unaware of my true shyness and introverted tendencies. But things get interesting when the curtain rises. I’m here to bring happiness to others.”

Since Simmons had not been seen in public for more than ten years, concerns were raised over his wellbeing. He appeared on NBC’s “TODAY” show in 2016 to refute reports that his housekeeper was holding him captive.

“I’m not being held hostage in my home by anyone. As I’ve always done, I do what I want to do. Therefore, since I’m Richard Simmons, folks ought to just take my word for it.”

Simmons’ withdrawal from public life was the topic of the “Missing Richard Simmons” podcast in 2017.

Simmons greeted his followers on social media the day before his birthday for their birthday wishes.

“I’m grateful for… In my entire life, I have never received so many birthday messages. I’m composing emails while seated here. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your Friday.

With a string of long social media messages in March informing followers that he had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, Simmons alarmed fans.

Later on, though, he made it clear that the diagnosis had actually been made “years ago” and that his intention was only to encourage people to be examined.

Days before to this conversation, a mysterious message indicating his impending death was posted. “I want to share some news with you. Don’t be sad, please. I’m… dying,” the message said.

After a while, Simmons corrected what he had said, stating that he wasn’t dying but was merely attempting to inspire.

“I apologize for the upset many of you have caused with my message today. I’ve even had contact from the media. I’m not going to die. The message was to be grateful for each day that we are given. I apologize for any confusion. Richard, with love.

This year, Simmons gained notoriety when he criticized two biographical films featuring comedian Pauly Shore.
