During the first week of the NBA season, Victor Wembanyama has been the center of attention. On Friday, the 19-year-old rookie did not let anyone down as the San Antonio Spurs overcame a late deficit to defeat the Houston Rockets 126-122 in overtime.
At the Frost Bank Center, the Frenchman concluded with 21 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation time, trailing his team by two points.
He is the second Spurs player to record 20 points or more and 10 rebounds or more in his first two professional games, according to ESPN’s Stats and Information.
With a wingspan of eight feet and a height of seven feet four inches, Wembanyama boasts a skill set that is uncommon in the NBA.
As he demonstrated in the preseason and on Wednesday in his debut, he is expected to be a formidable force on defense in his rookie year. His long reach allows him to cause disruptions for opponents.
Wembanyama told ESPN, “I really, really love winning.” “Of course, it feels great; it’s what I love most in life.”
The adolescent, who was selected first overall in this year’s draft, was complimented by Spurs guard Devin Vassell.
He reportedly added, according to ESPN, “I said this following the first preseason game or scrimmage, but he’s going to make some spectacular plays at the very least once a game, as well as tonight he probably had three or four.”
However, as I always say, he makes the game easy for us, and we must do the same for him. That’s just a testament to him.
Elsewhere, Luka Dončić led the Dallas Mavericks to a 125-120 victory over the Brooklyn Nets with 49 points, including four consecutive three-pointers in the last quarter.
Steph Curry scored a game-high 41 points to help the Golden State Warriors defeat the Sacramento Kings 122-114.
With a final line of 21 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists, Nikola Jokić demonstrated his exceptional play as the NBA champion Denver Nuggets defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 108-104.
