After lead singer Chester Bennington passed away in 2017, Linkin Park has reformed with a new lineup and is releasing their first new song.
The band debuted a webcast on Thursday, introducing new members of Linkin Park’s lineup: drummer Colin Brittain and singer Emily Armstrong, who will join returning members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix, and Joe Hahn. Armstrong and Shinoda take turns singing.
“The Emptiness Machine,” a new single by the new lineup, peaked at the top of the stream. Armstrong’s style of playing pleasantly carries on the band’s heritage: Her rich, rich voice is reminiscent of Bennington without ever trying to be cheesy, as the second track in the set, “Somewhere I Belong,” makes clear.
As he conducted introductions, Shinoda remarked, “This is a very special day for us,” adding that guitarist Alex Feder was covering for Delson for the evening. “Everyone here this afternoon is Chester Bennington,” Shinoda said to the assembly.
The new Linkin Park also revealed plans to release the album “From Zero.” Nov. 15 is when it releases.
Thanks in part to Bennington’s vocals, the rock-rap group became one of the 2000s’ most financially successful acts. Shortly after the release of the group’s last album, “One More Light,” he took his own life at the age of 41. Since then, Linkin Park has released other reissues, such as 20th-anniversary versions of “Hybrid Theory,” “Meteora,” and this year’s release of “Papercuts,” a compilation of their whole career’s greatest songs.
“Xero was our first band name before Linkin Park. According to a statement Shinoda released to announce the album’s impending release, “The title of this CD alludes to both our modest beginnings and the current adventure.”
Armstrong plays in an alt-rock group. Deceased producer and composer Sara and Brittain has collaborated with a number of artists, including All Time Low, One OK Rock, and Papa Roach. Rob Bourdon, the band’s original drummer, “has decided to step away,” a spokeswoman for the group informed The Associated Press. He takes his position.
