The projected $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot is going to be up for grabs Tuesday night, offering lottery players a chance to end a months-long string of bad luck.
Nobody has won the Mega Millions jackpot from April 18, leaving it to roll over and over until it was tied for the seventh-largest in US history. The drawing on Tuesday night will be the 30th since the jackpot was last won.
The drought is the result of a mix of bad luck and awful chances, as winning the Mega Millions jackpot is one in 302.6 million. Smaller prizes, that range from $1 million to $2, have much better odds of being won.
The $1.05 billion prize is for a single winner who decides to receive annual payments over 30 years through an annuity. A single winner who chooses a lump sum payment would collect $527.9 million.
Lottery winners would also be subject to federal taxes, as well as many state’s tax lottery earnings.
Mega Millions is available in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., and the US Virgin Islands.
