Portugal top Group H heading into the Round of 16 and Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. face Switzerland in their first knockout test.
The Swiss secured their place in the next round in Qatar with a 3-2 win over Serbia after finishing behind Brazil in Group G.
Ronaldo won his first international title with Portugal at Euro 2016 but, turning 38 next year, it could be his last shot at the game’s biggest prize.
Switzerland has reached the round of 16 for the third consecutive World Cup but are claiming its first quarter-final since hosting the tournament in 1954.

Portugal vs Switzerland Live Update, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time: Portugal 6-1 Switzerland
Not CR7, but six goals for rampant Portugal. They played some fantastic football, perhaps the best we’ve seen at the tournament, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement Goncalo Ramos scored a fairytale hat-trick.
Other goals, all crackers in their own way, came from Pepe, Rafael Guerrerio and Rafael Leo. Switzerland are a decent side, but they were separated.
90th+2 min: GOOOAAALLL!!!!! Take Raphael
Great for Portugal. Bernardo Silva passes to Leo, who cuts in from the left and curls a finish to Sommer, who looks oddly enough to tip it in. It has been overwhelming from Switzerland.
87th minute: Rafael Leo, many people’s choice to replace Ronaldo, comes on for Fernandes, who was also excellent.
84th minute: Ronaldo has the ball in the net but he is offside.
83rd minute: Xhaka coughs possession near the center circle. Bernardo overheated Ronaldo’s through-ball effort.
80th minute: Embolo flicks one on himself and tries an overhead kick as if to underline that he’s playing Portugal himself tonight.
76th minute: Bernardo wins the free kick. Ronaldo stands on it and does the whole routine. Big steps back, exaggerated sighs. He hits it halfway up the wall. A bit of a sad scene.
73rd minute: Here comes Ronaldo, Pepe fixes the armband on his bicep. His introduction is more of a cheer than Ramos coming out, which is funny. Grow up, you lot.
70th minute: Behave yourselves, boys. Fernandes failed to get on the end of Guerreiro’s volleyed cross. It would have been an unimaginable goal. Portugal having a lot of fun there.
67th minute: GOAAALLLLLL!!! Goncalo Ramos !!!!
A hat-trick in Ronaldo’s place. More beautiful creative play from Joao Felix, who feeds Ramos for an impeccably composed dink finish. This is the first hat trick in the 2022 World Cup.
64th minute: A large section of fans is now clamoring to see Ronaldo. It’s hard to know if he likes that or if it makes him feel like he’s quickly become some kind of complimentary footballer.
58th minute: GOAAALLLLLL!! Manuel Akanji !!!!
It has been a rough night for Akanji and his defensive colleagues but the Manchester City defender was on hand to get the Swiss on the scoresheet, firing home at the back post.
56th minute: GOAAALLLLLL!!!!! Rafael Guerrero!!!!
Fernando Santos’ next big selection calls come trumps. Switzerland is all over the place, defenders scattered everywhere as Joao Felix moves toward his area. He feeds Guerrero, who hits a high kick into the net.
51st minute: GOAALLLLLL!!!!! Goncalo Ramos !!!!
This is shaping up to be one of the best stories of the World Cup. Ramos gets in front of his man to poke Dalot’s low cross at the near post. In his first international start, replacing the greatest international goalscorer of all time, the 21-year-old led his country to the quarter-finals with something to spare.
46th minute: We’re back and it’s a change for Switzerland. Schar, who was all over the shop that first period, made way for Eray Comert.
Halftime: Switzerland avoids further damage. Without Ronaldo, Portugal was simply irreplaceable. They are playing in the quarter-finals against Morocco.
45th min+3: Portugal plays it short and across and Guerreiro hits an ambitious shot over. Given how much Switzerland has struggled with crosses, it seems like a waste.
45th min+2: Scar wins a corner under pressure from Dalot and Switzerland must see it.
45th minute: Joao Felix was absolutely brilliant in this first half. Atlético Madrid has started another great run. Fernandes can’t quite pull off a scud return pass.
43rd minute: Switzerland trailed and Sommer did well to stop Ramos from scoring a second goal.
38th minute: Almost a lifeline for Switzerland. Costa made a bit of a mess when heading in Fernandes’ cross from the right. Frühler gets to the loose ball with a header but a combination of the Portuguese goalkeeper and Dalot clears their lines.
33rd minute: GOAALLLL!!!! Pepe!!!!
And you all thought we didn’t see any goals from the Portuguese veteran this evening!
Pepe becomes the second oldest scorer at a World Cup with his first international goals for over 4 years!! 🇵🇹

32nd minute: Joao Felix rebuked a devilish ball from the left. Schar has to act and almost falls into his own trap. Corner of Portugal.
30th minute: Oh, off. Costa took no chances, tipping the ball into the bottom corner. From the resulting set piece, Switzerland were caught offside in the second leg.
29th minute: Embolo gets the better of Dias, who wraps his arms around himself to give the foul. Shaqiri stands on the free-kick and likes the look of it.
28th minute: For the mischievous among you, Guedes now has more goals in the knockout stages of the World Cup than Ronaldo.
22nd minute: Guedes again. Pepe takes a shot after a wonderful crossfield ball. To be honest, he should have passed Fernandez on his inside, but you can’t beg him for glory.
21st minute: Portugal is purring here and that man is Guedes. He lays down and Ottavia’s bouncing strike is collected by Somer.
17th minute: GOAALLLL!!!!!! Goncalo Guedes !!!!
Joao Felix received the throw-in and fed the ball to Guedes. Ronaldo’s substitute turns towards goal and, from inside the penalty area, curls a sensational strike into the near top corner. Who is Cristiano?
WHAT A STRIKE!! 🤩

Who saw that coming from Goncalo Ramos!! 🇵🇹
The 21-year-old only had 35 minutes of international experience before tonight… 👀#ITVFootball | #FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/gll8GEBi2d
13th minute: We’re settling into a bit of a pattern after those early half chances for Fernandes and Embolo. Get yourself a coffee.
5th minute: Embolo dribbles into the Portugal box. He looks sharp. Pepe gets a block and it’s Switzerland’s corner.
3rd minute: Dias catches Embolo in the face. Looks a little painful but Switzerland forward has made that meal. He’s back on his feet and telling the referee that Diaz elbowed him.
2nd minute: Portugal on the front foot. Joao Felix finds Fernandes well-placed in the box but his touch lets him down.
5 minutes from kickoff: The teams are out for the anthem, Ronaldo has already taken his place on the bench. This is a very, very unfamiliar vantage point at this stage.
