After five years of marriage, Maren Morris has requested a divorce from her husband Ryan Hurd, according to records obtained by Billboard.
Lawyers for the 33-year-old singer–songwriter claimed that she and Hurd, 36, were “unable to live together successfully as husband and wife” and that they were “experiencing irreconcilable differences in their marriage” in a case filed in Tennessee state court on October 2.
The prenuptial agreement the couple signed will determine how their assets are distributed, according to the document. According to court filings, the couple will submit a “permanent parenting plan” for a judge to approve; Morris also requested child support. The couple has a 3-year-old boy together.
Morris and Hurd have been contacted by Billboard for comment.
They started dating in 2015, and on March 24, 2018, they got married in Nashville. Son Hayes was born to them on March 23, 2020.
Morris and Hurd had previously worked together on tracks, like as their duet from 2021, “Chasing After You,” which peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The two co-wrote “Circles Around This Town” and “The Furthest Thing” from Morris’ 2022 album Humble Quest, “All My Favorite People,” a track with Brothers Osborne from her 2019 album GIRL, as well as “Pass It On” from Hurd’s 2021 album Pelago. They first met in Nashville’s songwriting communities.
Hurd defended Morris when she and Brittany Aldean, Jason Aldean’s wife, got into a verbal spat last year when the singer of “The Bones” called Brittany out for her comments regarding gender-affirming care.
Hurd said at the time on social media that “scoring quick points by picking on trans kids isn’t something that is brave at all.” “And I’m happy that Maren stood up for them. Only those with whom you disagree should be told to “shut up and sing.”
Hurd backed Morris when she announced her plans to leave the country music scene and released The Bridge, a two-song EP, in September. When he made that statement, he said on social media, “She deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated.”
