Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said on Wednesday that the Florida police chief who tried to kill himself on a highway following a dispute with his wife on Sunday night tendered his resignation before hurting himself.
Around 8:30 p.m., Levine Cava got on the phone with Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez, the chief of the Miami-Dade Police Department. She said Sunday. Levine Cava said that he informed her that “there is an incident at the Tampa hotel, and that he made mistakes and was sorry, and he was going returning to Miami and that we would talk over it more the next day.”
She said, “He told me he had committed a mistake, that he was willing to resign.”
Levine Cava that there is a continuing inquiry into the Ramirez-related events that happened on Sunday but didn’t provide into further detail about her conversation with Ramirez.
Authorities reported that Ramirez killed himself on a Florida roadway on Monday after arguing with his wife.
He underwent surgery on Monday afternoon, according to Miami-Dade police officials, who also reported that his status was stable.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister informed reporters in Tampa that the man “probably has a long road ahead, a lot of operations, but he is going to survive.”
Wednesday, Levine Cava stated Ramirez underwent surgery, and his status is stable. And each day that he is getting better, he is gaining strength. Now, she remarked, he is awake, attentive, and responsive.
Officers were called to the Florida Sheriff’s Association Summer Conference in Tampa on Sunday evening after “a male had pointed a gun at himself,” according to police.
Ramirez, 52, informed the responding officers upon their arrival on the 12th floor at the Marriott Westside that he posed no threat to himself or others and was subsequently “released at the scene,” according to Tampa police.
That meeting was described by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as a domestic quarrel between Ramirez and his wife.
Ramirez, though, reportedly drove off after that encounter and shot oneself in the head, according to the sheriff.
The incident, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, took place on I-75 south of Tampa.
In a statement, Cava stated, “Our sympathies are with Chief of Public Safety Freddy Ramirez & his family during this trying time. The only thing that matters at the moment is his health, and we will keep praying for a quick recovery.
In 2024, Ramirez has declared himself a candidate for Miami-Dade County sheriff.
According to his campaign biography, the head of law enforcement was reared by his grandparents in Hialeah after they escaped Cuba and the Castro regime.
According to his campaign, he obtained his degree from the University of Miami, wed his high school love, and join the Miami-Dade Police Department in 1995.
State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle for Miami-Dade County described the incident as “deeply saddening.”
An incident of this nature is quite upsetting, and she expressed her prayers and hopes for Chief Freddy Ramirez’ full recovery. We all agree that the world needs a lot more people who are as strong, brave, and dedicated as he has been throughout his career.
