Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the campaign of former president Donald Trump, said NBC News on Saturday that the campaign was compromised by an Iranian organization in June, “which aligns with President Trump’s recent choice of a vice presidential candidate.”

Politico was the first to report on the hack, and NBC News hasn’t independently confirmed when or where it happened. Politico claimed to have started getting emails in July from an unknown account disclosing internal Trump campaign data.

Research papers on at least two of the candidates for Trump’s running mate, including Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, the eventual GOP vice presidential nominee, were included in the materials.

“These documents were illegally obtained from hostile foreign sources with the intention of disrupting our democratic process and interfering with the 2024 election,” Cheung stated.

Cheung cited a report from Microsoft that was made public on Friday, stating that a high-ranking person on a presidential campaign received a spear phishing email in June from a “This Iranian outfit has ties to the IRGC, or Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.”

Microsoft was unable to identify the targeted campaign. Microsoft declined to provide information about the incident beyond what was stated in its report published on Friday.

The Iranians are aware that, as he did during his first four years in office, President Trump will put an end to their rule of terror. Reprinting papers or internal conversations by the media or news organizations is exactly what America’s foes desire, according to Cheung.

The FBI stated that it was “aware of the media reporting,” but it would not elaborate.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN issued a statement saying, “We do not accord any credence to such reports.” The Iranian government has no intention of meddling in the US presidential election, nor does it retain any reason to do so.

Politico said that when the news outlet enquired about the source of the documents being leaked, the anonymous emailer replied, “I advise you not to be interested in finding out where I acquired them.” Any response to this query will put me in jeopardy and prevent you from releasing them lawfully.

An NBC News request for comment was not immediately answered by Politico’s representatives.
