According to court filings, a lady from Arizona is suspected of using bleach over the course of several months to taint her estranged husband’s coffee, a U.S. Air Force serviceman.
Melody Johnson was detained on July 18 after her husband allegedly sent authorities a video of her adding the poison to his coffee maker.
At the end of March 2023, while stationed in Germany, the spouse, who is not identified in court documents, began to notice that his coffee tasted awful.
Johnson and her spouse cohabitated with their child despite going through a divorce.
After drinking the coffee for two to three weeks, the spouse tested the water in his faucet using chemical testing strips; the results were normal. His coffee pot’s water tested positive for “high levels of chlorine,” according to court records.
The spouse installed a camera in the house in May 2023, and the footage saw Johnson “pouring something into his coffee pot.” According to the lawsuit, he feigned to drink the coffee up until the day the family returned to the United States on June 28 because he didn’t want to disclose the incident to German authorities.
The spouse installed a second camera while temporarily stationed at a motel on Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, and on July 5 it is claimed that Johnson could once more be seen “walking to his coffee maker and pouring something into his water reservoir.” The spouse called the police the following day, but the authorities informed him that it wasn’t apparent what Johnson was adding to his coffee maker.
According to court filings, the husband installed more cameras that appeared to be fire alarms to the ceiling when the family moved into permanent lodgings on July 7. Three were positioned: one over the coffee maker, one in the laundry room where the bleach was kept, and one to depict movement between those two locations.
The spouse returned to the police after gathering numerous tapes reportedly showing Johnson “take bleach, pour it into a container then walk around and pour it in the coffee maker,” according to court filings.
The spouse reported to authorities that he thought his estranged wife was trying to have him killed so she could get life insurance.
The Tucson Police Department detained Johnson and charged him with attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated assault, and poisoning food or drink. Online records show that she is detained at the Pima County Adult Detention Facility.
Following the execution of a search warrant at the residence, a container with a bleach-like scent and some liquid inside was discovered in Johnson’s bedroom behind her bathroom sink. Additionally, according to court records, the coffee maker contained a liquid that had a bleach-like odor.
It’s unclear at this point if Johnson is represented by counsel.
