Kylian Mbappe became the second player in history to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final after France drew Argentina and Lionel Messi 3-3 in a penalty shootout at the Lucelle Stadium.

Chasing elusive glory in his final World Cup, Messi put Argentina ahead with a penalty in the 23rd minute before Angel Di Maria’s spot-kick winner scored a superb second.

France were well beaten and Didier Deschamps returned to his bench four minutes before the break, replacing Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele.

One of the players he sent on, Randall Kolo Muani, was fouled by Nicolas Otamendi in the box and Mbappe had another option and converted from 12 yards before going over, Marcus Thuram finishing emphatically with the Paris Saint-Germain star.

After Messi sealed the winner in the 108th minute, Gonzalo Montiel’s handball gave Mbappe the chance he would not give up.

Argentina vs France Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

8th Penalty: Gonzalo Montiel, who gives the second penalty…. sends Lloris the wrong way and Argentina are world champions. Messi is glorious!

7th Penalty: Randall Kolo Muani. WALLOP! Eintracht Frankfurt man what a game it was. Bats it in the middle. France 2-3 Argentina

6th Penalty: Leandro Paredes over. Lloris dives to his right, gets a hand to it but it’s hard enough and low enough. France 1-3 Argentina

5th penalty: Aurelien Tchoumeni, he must be tired. Martinez dodges the ball, badass. Whistle… Wait Tchoumeni, and pull it wide! France 1-2 Argentina

4th Penalty: Paulo Dybala here, left foot. Between the bottom and the bottom. France 1-2 Argentina

3rd Penalty: Kingsley Coman for France. Martinez dived to his right and saved. France 1-1 Argentina

2nd penalty: Here’s Messi. Will he match his PSG teammates? Yes! As cold as you like. France 1-1 Argentina

1st Penalty: It’s Mbappe vs Martinez pt 3. The Argentinian goalkeeper gets a hand but it goes in. France 1-0 Argentina.

120th minute + 5: Mbappe knows how many challenges there are when he dribbles through goodness, as you do at this stage. He is finally out of the crowd and Paulo Dybala hooves are clear. Full time and we’re going to penalties.

120th minute+4: Lautaro Martinez!!!! Argentina broke Muani’s chance. It’s a great header opportunity for the Inter striker but he gets his angle all wrong.

120th minute + 3: Paulo Dybala comes on for Nico Tagliafico, you’d imagine taking the penalty. Axel Disassi replaces Jules Conde, presumably to do the same. All the best, guys.

120th min+1: Oops, Mbappe’s cross goes all the way and he nearly scores four goals. Randal Kolo Muani just can’t get it.

120th minute: Argentina corner. German Pejella, who was on the cards for Argentina when he came in moments earlier at centre-back to see out the win, is a big presence. France is clear. It looks like we’re going to a penalty.

118th minute: GOAALLLLLL!! Kylian Mbappe!!

Mbappe goes to the left corner again, he breaks the heart of Argentina again. He is the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final since Geoff Hurst in 1966.

116th minute: Penalty to France.

113th minute: Leandro Paredes launched a “You’re not going anywhere, mate” challenge on Eduardo Camavinga. Booked

GOOALL!!!!!! LIONEL MESSI!!!!!
LIONEL MESSI SCORES THE BIGGEST GOAL OF HIS CAREER BUT HE DOESN’T CARE!!!!!!

108th minute: Messi gets on the end of a bouncing ball from a throw-in and fires into the bottom right corner but Lloris saves.

Halftime in extra time: France were well on top at the start of the extra period, but the introduction of Leandro Paredes and, in particular, Lautaro Martinez, seemed to give Argentina a shot in the arm.

105th minute+1: Lautaro Martinez scores from Messi’s pass. He can’t get a bouncing ball under his spell but stabs a shot at goal. This is another big block from Dayot Upamecano. To add insult to injury, the officials award a goal kick.

105th minute: Chance for Argentina. Mack plays a combination of Alistair and Messi and later on Lautaro Martinez. Dayot Upamecano flies in with a potential goal-saving challenge. From the rebound, Gonzalo Montiel welts one perfectly from the bottom of the City. Deflecting that one over will give Raphael Varane a headache. As far as France is concerned, it was a good thing he did.

103th minute: Double change for Argentina. The brilliant Rodrigo de Paul and Julian Alvarez ended the relentless transition and Leandro Paredes and Lautaro Martinez came on.

100th minute: Argentina can’t get out. Yusuf Fofana scored from Gonzalo Montiel’s free kick. Kingsley Common stands above left. Headed clear, Fofana’s shot deflected and Messi conceded a corner.

99th minute: Rodrigo de Paul, who certainly can’t leave much at this point, makes a major tackle as Kingsley Coman tries to break into the box.

96th minute: Yusuf Fofana gave Adrien Rabiot the lead. There’s a swagger about France now and Argentina look shattered.

91st minute: Here we go again. Gonzalo Montiel makes one change for Argentina, replacing Nahuel Molina at right back. That’s like-for-like change. I’m surprised Lionel Scaloni hasn’t turned to Leandro Paredes to bolster the midfield.

Full Time: Goodness Kind. what to say The Argentine had one hand and two fingers on the trophy, but Kylian Mbappe had a different idea. Incredible, incredible views. Lionel Scaloni’s side have been here before in this tournament, of course, when they let a 2-0 lead slip in extra time against the Netherlands.

Will we get a winner in extra time or will the World Cup be decided in a penalty shootout for the third time in history?

97th minute+7: What a moment. Argentina out, Julian Alvarez down the left. Now here Messi, 25 yards from goal, shoots cleanly and Hugo Lloris turns.

90th minute + 6: Argentina are all over the place here, needing a couple of last ditch challenges to stop Randall Kolo Muani.

90th min+4: Kingsley Coman twists and turns, goes down, referee waves. Eduardo Camavinga scored with a low cross and Amy Martinez hung on well.

90th min+3: Nicolas Otamendi, whose foul started all this chaos, gets a crucial block to divert Mbappe’s shot behind.

90th minute: There will be eight minutes of stoppage time. How are the nerves?

87th minute: Marcus Thuram goes down in the box as Enzo Fernandez turns the boot. The referee gives Thuram a book for simulation! Replays suggest it was a very brave and correct call.

85th minute: Mbappe suddenly happy. He crosses from the left and Randall Kolo Muani looks set to head home. Nico Tagliafico gets a significant nudge at forward.

81st minute: GOOAALLL!!!!! Kylian Mbappe

Oh my goodness, France is level!!!!!!! Mbappe gave and go with Randall Kolo Muani and he crashed the ball inside to Amy Martinez. All Kingsley Coman disposed of from Messi.

80th minute: GOOAAALLLL!!!!! Kylian Mbappe (penalty)

Amy Martinez is a penalty expert and guesses right. But Mbappe finds enough space and power to get past him in the bottom left corner. Start the game!

Penalty to France in the 79th minute! Nicolas Otamendi finds himself in an almighty tangle and brings down Randall Kolo Muani and Les Bleus have a huge lifeline.

78th minute: No ill effects for Rodrigo de Paul, who scampers Messi’s pass into the right channel. His low cross is very close to Lloris.

77th minute: Eduardo Camavinga scores his goal in the rotation of Rodrigo de Paul, becoming the latest Frenchman to boot Argentina’s midfield paste up into the air.

72nd minute: Enzo Fernandez looks to curl one but Hugo Lloris is behind it. That would have been a fantastic third.

71st minute: Mbappe gets a chance to cut inside and thrash over. In fairness, it barely had half a chance. Eduardo Camavinga and Kingsley Coman come on for Theo Hernandez and Antoine Griezmann. The games are too many for France at the moment, but Griezmann’s removal seems really odd.

67th minute: A chance for France. The corner comes in from the left and Randall Kolo Muani hits a near post header. Well, except for the fact it hits him in the shoulder and goes wide.

65th minute: Angel Di Maria’s night is at an end. In comes Marcos Acuna.

63rd minute: Messi and Julian Alvarez combine on halfway and the latter sends Alexis McAllister scampering towards goal. Hugo Lloris gets there first, albeit with the help of a shove on MacAllister by Dayot Upamecano that the referee chooses to ignore.

60th minute: Angel Di Maria continues Jules Kounde’s torrid evening in his company by running the France right-back in circles. The ball is worked to Messi and only a fabulous challenge from Adrien Rabiot stops him from bringing the house down.

59th minute: Julian Alvarez fashions a yard of space and Hugo Lloris gets down well to save at his near post.

58th minute: Now Mbappe gives De Paul some lumps. That’s a petulant kick to the Argentine midfielder’s calf.

55th minute: Rodrigo de Paul, who is doing an insatiable little masterpiece of a game, Mbappe is considered to have caused a problem where France stopped an attack and comes away with the ball. Adrien Rabiot hacked him in desperation.

51st minute: France corner, but Amy Martinez claims it with such authority that it feels like a sapping moment for the champions.

49th minute: Christian Romero faced the challenge of winning the ball in front of Griezmann. Argentina’s center-back is 40 yards from France’s goal – Argentina is sitting on nothing. Angel Di Maria volleys past Rodgerio De Paul. He hits it down the pitch and is caught by Hugo Lloris. That would have been an amazing goal.

46th minute: We’re back. No change for either side. Perhaps best for France, Didier Deschamps has already made two. Oh, Hugo Lloris makes a very important claim as Alexis McAllister is set to make it 3-0. There would certainly be no way back for France if they let another go.

Halftime: It’s hard to think of a more one-sided first half in a World Cup final since France took a 2-0 lead at home to Brazil in 1998. Messi and Argentina are 45 minutes apart.

45th min+7: Antoine Griezmann floats an inviting free-kick from the right. It’s better than the Argentine’s top line but far ahead of Raphael Varane.

45th minute: In news that will be greeted by huge crowds across France, there will be seven minutes of extra time.

41st minute: Wow! Didier Deschamps made a double change five minutes before halftime! Marcus Thuram and Randall Kolo Muani are in for Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele. good to me

37th minute: If you were concerned about Argentina’s composure after the first goal with a couple of rash fouls, Di Maria is literally in tears. But, hey, why not. It’s unbelievable.

36th minute: GOAAALL!!! ANGEL DE MARIA!!!!!

Deadly break, a cool finish, Argentina in the dream country. That is such a glorious team goal. Messi flicks on Julian Alvarez’s ball which releases Alexis McAllister. The Brighton man, who is having a great game, picks out Di Maria, who purposefully boots his finish into the turf to skim past Hugo Lloris. The Tottenham goalkeeper beat the old Mesut Ozil.

31st minute: Argentina is still all over France. Les Bleus’ strategy of ignoring Di Maria and hoping he goes away is not a good one. Messi takes the ball in a dangerous area. Surely Didier Deschamps’ men can’t be this hopeless for much longer.

26th minute: Argentina celebrate going ahead by conceding a number of unnecessary free-kicks to Christian Romero and Messi. Sit down, boys.

23rd minute: GOAALLLL!!!! LIONEL MESSI!!!
As cold as you like. Lloris, who is very good in these situations, blinks first and falls to his right, Messi rolls into the next corner.

21st minute: Penalty to Argentina!!! Ousmane Dembele gets himself into trouble. Angel Di Maria goes down under minimal contact. Now, Leo…

20th minute: Olivier Giroud basically crowdsurfs to head past two Argentina defenders. The referee awards a free kick against the French striker.

19th minute: Theo Hernandez is really comfortable going forward. A haphazard combination of Rodrigo de Paul and Cristian Romero brought him down. Dangerous free kick here with Antoine Griezmann.

17th minute: Theo Hernandez has another scary moment and the Argentine is down the right. Messi can’t quite get to Rodrigo de Paul’s cross and then his shot bobbles unhelpfully for Angel Di Maria, who blasts it into the sky.

14th minute: Angel Di Maria, who has been a roaming threat so far, comes in from the left and finds Messi. The return pass is not to be scratched. It’s starting with the giants, really, but Argentina looks the most likely overall. France looks sluggish, but then they usually score at this point, don’t they?

9th minute: More good moments for Argentina as Rodrigo de Paul deflects a shot. Messi’s corner is, well, rubbish, but the second ball is recovered and France is disorganized as Hugo Lloris opts to stay on his line. He then ventures through it and takes a crack at Tottenham teammate Christian Romero’s ribs. Hope Antonio Conte enjoyed that!

5th minute: Alexis McAllister hits a dream clean shot from 25 yards in a World Cup final. Unfortunately for him, it’s straight into Hugo Lloris’ midriff.

3rd minute: Messi goes about his business on the edge of France’s territory. Rodrigo de Paul passes to Julian Alvarez. The Manchester City striker could not make clean contact and the offside flag was up in any case.

1st minute: We’re off! Argentina in their traditional sky blue and white stripes. The last time they wore that in the finals? 1986…

Argentina vs France lineup, team news

Argentina insiders said the only doubt was whether the five-man backline would feature Lisandro Martinez (5-3-2) or whether attacking winger Angel Di Maria would start in a 4-3-3.

Di Maria got the nod, suggesting Lionel Scaloni wanted to target France left-back Theo Hernandez. Making questionable defensive decisions when under pressure, the Frenchman is known for his attacking attacks.

Argentina (5-3-3, right to left): 23. e. Martinez (GK) — 26. Molina, 13. Romero, 19. Otamendi, 3. Tagliafico — 7. De Paul, 24. e. Fernandez, 20 McAllister – 11. Di Maria, 10. Messi, 9. Alvarez

The good news for France is that players considered doubtful for the final due to illness or injury all trained regularly on Saturday apart from Kinsley Coman, who worked separately from the group, still feeling the effects of the bug.

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot and defender Dayot Upmecano return after missing the semi-final against Morocco, meaning Didier Deschamps returns to the XI to beat England in the quarter-finals.

France (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Lloris (GK) — 5. Kaunde, 4. Varane, 18. Upamecano, 22. T. Hernandez — 7. Griezmann, 8. Chaumeni, 14. Rabiot — 11. Dembele, 9. Giroud, 10. Mbappe
