After undergoing surgery, Sophia Loren is recovering.

The 89-year-old Oscar-winning actress broke multiple bones, including her femur and hip, when she fell in the bathtub of her Geneva, Switzerland, home on Sunday. A representative for the Italian celebrity said on Monday that they were hopeful for her post-surgery recovery.

Tuesday, Carlo Giusti, Loren’s manager, gave PEOPLE an update, saying, “The surgery went extremely well.”

She has begun her therapy, and Giusti said she is gradually getting better. “At this time, there is no other news.”

On September 2, Loren attended the Armani fashion show at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.

Loren was “very lively” at the moment, according to Italian journalist and critic Giuseppe Fantasia, who was present at the Armani event.

Fantasia remarks on the event, “You may tell she loves these events, she’s really happy at them.” She did a fantastic job of presenting herself.

He continues, “She was really having a great time.” “When they saw her, people were really excited.”

According to another observer at the Armani event, Loren “looked absolutely fine” & “probably had the biggest crowd surrounding her at the show.” She was completely encircled, speaking with people, and in really excellent form, the onlooker continues.

On Sunday, information about Loren’s accident was posted on the Instagram account of her restaurant company.

“Ms. Loren suffered hip fractures today after falling at her Geneva home. Having undergone surgery successfully, she will now need to observe a brief time of recovery and pursue a path to rehabilitation, according to the message, which was loosely translated into English.

“Thank goodness, everything turned out well, and the Lady will see us again shortly. The entire staff of Sophia Loren Restaurant would like to wish her a fast recovery at this time.

The actress most recently appeared in her son Edoardo Ponti’s Oscar-nominated The Life Ahead, which was released in 2018.

In November 2020, Loren stated in AARP: The Magazine that she felt younger than her years: “When I say I’m 86, there are occasions when I don’t believe it. I feel 20! When I see myself in the mirror, I feel proud of myself. I don’t enquire about your greatness or beauty. No! It’s how I feel on the inside, how safe and content I feel. That is what counts.
