Billy Miller, a 43-year-old actor best known for his part in the serial opera “The Young and the Restless,” committed suicide, according to his mother.

In a statement published on X, the website that replaced Twitter, Patricia Miller stated that her son had bipolar disorder and added that “in the end, the disease won the fight.”

He battled bipolar depression for years in a long, arduous, and brave manner. He exerted every effort to keep the illness under control, she stated. He cherished his friends, loved his family, and had a devoted following, but ultimately the sickness won the battle, and he gave his life.

Billy Miller’s manager, who on Sunday made his passing known to the public in a letter to Variety, published the message on X.

The actor would have turned 44 on Sunday.

Billy Miller passed away in Austin, Texas, on Friday, the magazine claims.

Billy Miller has been in a number of TV series in addition to “Young and the Restless,” for which he won three Emmys, including “General Hospital,” “Suits,” “Ray Donovan,” “NCIS,” and “Truth Be Told.”

Understanding bipolar disorder

Billy Miller was not alone in his battle with bipolar disorder: The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that about 3% of American adults have the disorder.

Celebrities including singers Mariah Carey, Selena Gomez, and Bebe Rexha, former NBA player Delonte West, and college basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie have all recently come forward to openly discuss their own struggles with mental illness.

The NIMH describes bipolar disorder as a “mental illness which leads to unusual shifts in a person’s mood, activity levels, energy, & concentration” that are more severe than the typical ups and downs that people encounter.

There are three distinct kinds of illness: cyclothymic disorder, bipolar I disorder, and bipolar II disorder.

According to the NIMH, all three types entail abrupt mood swings ranging from extremely upbeat and energizing, known as manic episodes, to extremely depressed and mournful, known as depression episodes.

Different moods and the frequency of mood changes can affect a person’s ability to function on a day-to-day basis as well as their ability to sleep and be active.

Bipolar disorder is typically identified in late adolescence or early adulthood, according to the NIMH.

It is a disorder that calls for lifelong care, which may range from prescription medication to expert talk therapy.

According to the NIMH, many bipolar illness sufferers also struggle with anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), substance misuse, eating disorders, and other mental health issues.

According to the NIMH, bipolar disorder symptoms include observable changes in mood, sleep, and activity patterns, as well as mood fluctuations that can range from manic to depression.
