There is talk on Broadway that the revival of “Sweeney Todd” will feature Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster in place of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford.

After Groban and Ashford make their last bows on January 14, Foster and Tveit will play the lead roles in the renowned dark Stephen Sondheim musical “The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” according to a source.

Social media has already been rife with rumors of the new pair, and sources now inform us that the news is close at hand. The show just revealed that its run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre has been extended through spring 2024.

During its 46-week run, the musical starred Groban and Ashford, and it garnered eight Tony Awards, including two winners.

Starring in the program is Gaten Matarazzo from “Stranger Things.”

Hugh Jackman and Foster most recently featured together in “The Music Man,” while Tveit is well-known for his lengthy tenure in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical.”

In 2016, the stars collaborated once more on a concert titled “Defying Gravity: The Songs of Stephen Schwartz” at Sydney’s Theatre Royal.

We never heard back from the stars’ and the show’s representatives.

In 1979, “Sweeney Todd” had its Broadway debut. Additionally, a 2007 Tim Burton movie starring Johnny Depp was an adaptation of it.

“One of the greatest musicals ever written,” according to The Post, which also described the current production as “a calmer chap with an ax to grind” and noted that “Ashford is a remarkably gifted comedienne.” Groban is not the threatening, feral Todd that Len Cariou & Michael Cerveris were.
