Deebo Samuel, a wide receiver with the San Francisco 49ers, left Sunday’s contest against the Cleveland Browns in the first half due to a shoulder injury. In addition to losing running back Christian McCaffrey to an oblique injury in the second half, the Niners were already missing Samuel.
At halftime, the team ruled out Samuel’s ability to return after first classifying him as questionable. Prior to being declared out of the game with 10:58 remaining in the third quarter, McCaffrey’s injury was also labeled as questionable.
Although Samuel received a status update on his injury at the same time as left tackle Trent Williams with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter, it was not immediately clear when or how Samuel sustained the shoulder injury. Williams’ right ankle was rolled up, but he soon made a few offensive plays afterward.
Before spending the remainder of the first half in the locker room, Samuel spent roughly 10 minutes in the second quarter’s blue medical tent. Before getting hurt, he had two carries for 11 yards.
After first suffering an oblique injury in the third quarter, McCaffrey made an effort to continue playing, but he left the game after one carry that was reversed due to a holding penalty. Before being replaced, he finished with 11 carries for 43 yards and three catches for 9 yards and a touchdown.
Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell filled in for McCaffrey while Ray-Ray McCloud and Jauan Jennings took over for Samuel.
