He closed the article by writing, “[Ever] since we first met back in college, you have rested in incredible soul God rest, NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE HEARD THE WORDS ABOUT MY FRIEND RIP Keith.”

Foxx first broke the news of Jefferson’s passing earlier on Thursday, months after Jefferson said he had been stricken with cancer. Foxx remarked, “This one hurts.”

“Keith, you’ve shown nothing but absolute grace, all of your life your heart is pure your love is boundless you were an amazing soul,” Foxx wrote in a letter.

“You are greatly missed by everyone. It will take a while for this to recover, Foxx continued. Hello, my friend. I cherish you.

Nicole St. John, Jefferson’s publicist, confirmed the news on Thursday and expressed her “deep sadness” in a statement to PEOPLE. He had a great talent and was a compassionate man. For the arts community, it is a grave loss.

“He had many projects in the pipeline & was in the middle of a project that caught his unique and resonant voice,” stated St. John. He was eager to come back in the coming year. I am sending his family and close friends my thoughts and prayers.

According to his personal website, Jefferson worked as an actor, producer, voiceover artist, and acting coach. After getting to know Foxx in college, he went on to collaborate with the actor on a number of projects over the course of his career, including The Jamie Foxx Show, Django Unchained, Day Shift, and the upcoming film The Burial.

The Burial’s trailer was posted by Jefferson on Instagram last month. He captioned the post: “It’s finally here and what an honor it was to work on this project with a great bunch of performers. A star-studded cast includes Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, and me in my most significant part to date.
