A former NFL player has been arrested in Mississippi on kidnapping charges, police said.

Jerrell Povey, 35, who played football for Ole Miss in college and played several seasons in the NFL, was booked into the Madison County Detention Center on a kidnapping charge around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, booking records show.

Ridgeland police officers found Povey and accomplice Gavin Bates, 35, at the Chase Bank on Highland Colony Parkway on Thursday, Police Chief Brian Myers told NBC affiliate WLBT in Jackson. Ridgeland is about 10 miles northeast of Jackson.

Police said the victim contacted police and told officers he had been kidnapped “against his will” and “forced to withdraw money” at the bank, Myers said.

The police chief said that the victim is safe and the incident is being investigated.

Both Povey and Bates were later taken into custody on kidnapping charges. Bates was also charged with a controlled substance violation.

Both are being held without bond pending a hearing Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. It was not immediately clear if the couple has retained lawyers.

The athlete played for Ole Miss in 2008. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs as a sixth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He went on to play for the Houston Texans and in 2015 signed with the Washington Redskins, now known as the Washington Commanders, but was later released a year later.

He announced his retirement from football in 2017.
