Even though Jada Pinkett Smith‘s memoir Worthy won’t be released for a few more days, she has been actively advertising it and it has already attracted a lot of attention. With her shocking admission that she and Will Smith have been living separate lives for the past seven years, she has startled many people. She even went so far as to claim that she was “shocked” when Smith referred to her as his wife during their infamous 2022 Oscars exchange with Chris Rock.
Smith has become a little more reserved while Pinkett Smith has continued to be frank and open. However, the Men in Black actor has now broken his silence and provided fans with an inside look at his and Pinkett Smith’s unusual relationship.
According to Pinkett Smith in a recent interview with the New York Times, her book isn’t going to be a “fluffy journey,” and she begins it by “drop[ping] you right into one of the most difficult times of my life, and then we’ll backtrack.” She must have used a successful strategy since what her estranged husband Smith read definitely threw him off guard.
By Jada Pinkett Smith, “Worthy”
Smith explained to NYT through email that the book gave him a wake-up call. “A sort of emotional blindness sets in,” he said, “and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity for their hidden nuances and subtle beauties when you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life.” The story quoted Pinkett Smith as saying that the actor ultimately discovered that she is more “resilient, clever, and compassionate than he’d understood.”
And even while it seems like they still have a lot to sort out, they appear to be getting along. A year after the Oscars Slap, Pinkett Smith disclosed that she had an ayahuasca session, and Smith was present for this introspective experience. He said to Pinkett Smith, who was coming down from the drug, “You’ll have to cut off your spirit’s wrist to break free of our Divine handcuffs,” which is a plant-based hallucinogenic that has been utilized in ceremonial settings by First Nations peoples for centuries.
One thing is certain as the two continue to navigate their atypical relationship: they are taking a good, hard look at it and doing their best to support one other’s growth and individual life journeys.
