According to a recent lawsuit, Sophie Turner alleges that Joe Jonas is keeping their children’s passports from them, preventing them from traveling to England with their mother.
The Game of Thrones actress, 27, filed a lawsuit against her former spouse, 34, on Thursday for alleged wrongful retention of the couple’s two children, Willa, 3, and a daughter named D., 14 months old, according to prior court documents.
Turner claims in the case, which PEOPLE was able to receive, that Jonas will not give over the kids’ passports, preventing them from traveling abroad.
The filings state that the Father’s Florida attorney “confirmed” on September 19, 2023, “that the Father isn’t going to give the passports to the Mother & will not give permission for the children to return home to England.”
“In light of the Father’s express declarations that he will not send the children back to England and will not give the Mother the children’s passports, the Mother submitted her Hague Convention Application for Return to the Central Authority for England & Wales looking for the return of the children to England on September 20, 2023.”
Jonas issued a statement in response to Turner’s lawsuit shortly after her claim was submitted, and PEOPLE was able to receive it.
In New York, the two met in a “cordial” setting, according to the statement, and Jonas came away with the understanding that the former couple would strive for an “amicable co-parenting setup.”
“Less than a day later, Sophie made the decision to bring the kids permanently to the UK. She then asked through this filing that Joe provide the children’s passports so she could remove them out of the country right away,” the document added.
“Joe wants to have joint custody of the children so that they can be raised by both their mother and father. He is, of course, also happy with the children being reared in both the UK and the United States. The majority of the children’s lives have been spent in the United States, where they were both born and raised.
The children should be returned to England, according to Turner’s complaint, which is supported by the actress’s legal team, which claims the alleged “wrongful retention” started on September 20.
The mother of two alleges that during chats over Christmas 2022, she and the musician decided to call England their “forever home”.
The records claim that before Turner started filming the Joan mini-series she worked on this past summer in April, the pair had already sold their Miami property and were in the midst of purchasing a new home in the English countryside.
Following over three years of dating, Jonas and Turner got married in 2019. Each person shared a message on social media about the breakdown of their four-year marriage after Jonas filed for divorce on September 5.
After four incredibly happy years of marriage, we have mutually chosen to end our marriage, the two of them wrote on Instagram.
There are many possible explanations, but ultimately, this is a shared choice, and we sincerely hope that everyone will respect our wishes for privacy for both us and our children.
