Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, declared on Friday that she would run again in 2024.

Pelosi posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “our City needs us now more than ever to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery.”

“America must demonstrate to the rest of the world that our country still stands for liberty and justice for everyone. I am running for reelection because of this, and I respectfully beg for your support,” she added.

According to her campaign, she originally made the news in San Francisco at her regular “Politics & Eggs” breakfast gathering with fans and volunteers.

In our nation, we face a challenge, Pelosi remarked. “Our democracies are in jeopardy. I simply say it, very regrettably, without any fear of exaggeration.

In 2025, Pelosi wants to “ensure that she is serving with a President Joe Biden & a Speaker Hakeem Jeffries,” according to the campaign.

Pelosi, 83, won her first congressional election in 1987. In 2007, she was the first woman to serve as speaker of the House, and in 2019, she was chosen by her colleagues to take the helm once more.

Pelosi, a prominent political figure admired for her skill in the legislature and fundraising, led the Democratic Party under four presidents. She steered the House through two impeachments of the previous president, Donald Trump, and assisted in getting the Affordable Care Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and other laws through Congress.

Following the party’s close loss of the majority in the midterm elections, she resigned as the leader of the House Democrats last year. She continued serving as a member of Congress. At that point, she declared that it was time to hand the reins of leadership to a new group of individuals.

A new day is on the horizon, as I look forward, ever forward, to the unfolding story of our country, a story of joy and love, of patriotism and growth, of many becoming one, she said in an impassioned speech delivered on the House floor. Making the aspirations of today into the realities of tomorrow is always an incomplete mission.

Later, Pelosi received the honorific “Speaker Emerita” designation and had her official portrait displayed in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.

Pelosi remarked when she officially declared her reelection run on Friday, “It’s been such a privilege. I’ve received numerous accolades from my peers over the course of my 20-year career as Speaker, Whip, and Leader, but none mean more to me than the opportunity to stand on the House Floor and claim to speak for the residents of San Francisco.

The announcement of Pelosi’s reelection coincides with Democrats’ efforts to regain majority rule in the House in the 2024 election cycle. She will serve her 20th term in Congress if she is reelected in the strongly Democratic Bay Area seat.

The decision is also being debated in light of the relatively old ages of the country’s elected authorities.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who is 90 years old, received calls for her resignation earlier this year after a severe attack of shingles kept her away from Washington for several months. At the start of 2025, when her time as senator comes to an end, Feinstein has already announced her retirement.

Pelosi defended Feinstein against such charges, claiming she had never seen a guy in Congress receive it.

Pelosi stated earlier this year, “I have never seen them pursue a sick guy in the Senate in that way.
