Following the issuance of a warrant for first-degree murder in connection with the passing of his mother, Maywood, Illinois, police stated in a statement that former NFL player Sergio Brown was brought into jail on Tuesday.

Brown, 35, has been missing since Myrtle Brown, his mother, 73, was found dead close to her suburban Chicago home last month.

Police reported that he was detained in San Diego while returning to the US from Mexico. He is still in custody and is awaiting extradition to Maywood, where he will be charged with murder.

According to a law enforcement source knowledgeable with the case, Mexican law enforcement officials had been aware of Brown’s whereabouts since at least September 19. CNN was the first to report on Brown’s detention. After Illinois authorities got an arrest warrant in connection with his mother’s passing, Mexican law enforcement deported him, according to the source.

According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department’s inmate records, Brown was being detained in the department’s custody as of Wednesday morning due to a felony fugitive arrest warrant.

According to a news release from Maywood police, the former NFL player’s arrest is connected to the discovery of his mother’s body on September 16 after family members informed authorities they had been unable to locate or get in touch with either her or her son. According to the department, her body was discovered next to a creek behind her Maywood, Illinois, house, some 11 miles from Chicago.

According to spokeswoman Natalia Derevyanny, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that she died from wounds sustained in an assault, and the cause of death was listed as a homicide.

In 2010, Brown joined the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent after playing defensive back for Notre Dame. In the NFL, he spent seven seasons with the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills.

The family claimed they had not contact to Brown

Sergio Brown’s brother posted a request for assistance on social media the day after his mother was discovered dead.

Nick Brown posted on Instagram, saying, “My brother Sergio is still missing.” I want him to feel that I love him and that he should please return home if anyone knows where he is.

We are all going through this together, Nick Brown wrote. “It’s a sad but hopeful time.” “Mom always used to say, ‘Difficult times don’t last,’ and our most recent chat about how they do is my ray of hope.

“Mom, I want to thank you for saving my art and for being strong, compassionate, diligent, fancy, and amusing. I won’t disappoint you.

Last month, Maywood police said they were aware of at least one social media video that appeared to show Sergio Brown babbling about “fake news” and saying he thought his mother was on vacation in a tropical setting. The location and timing of the video’s capture are unknown, and police declined to confirm to CNN that the guy in the video is Sergio Brown.

Christian Conway, Myrtle Brown’s lawyer, released a statement last week urging authorities to move the investigation into her death forward since there was enough evidence to make an arrest.

“We kindly request that law enforcement authorities, in especially the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, work assiduously and fully to uncover the truth and hold those responsible for Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown accountable. No family should have to live with the burden of uncertainty around the circumstances of the death of a loved one, the family stated.

In addition, the family said that they had not spoken to Sergio Brown since he vanished.

“We never stop praying for his health and fighting for his swift and secure repatriation to the United States. Let’s join together to make this awful loss a force for justice and good change,” the statement said.

“Myrtle was a kind, compassionate, and inspiring soul who made everyone in her vicinity feel important. Our death of Myrtle has left an enormous vacuum not only in our hearts but also in our communities because of her infectious smile and attitude, the family said.

Neighbors commended Myrtle Brown to CNN station WBBM when Sergio Brown was missing.

Her neighbor Carlos Cortez told WBBM, “Myrtle, she was an outstanding woman, and I’m hoping she’s in the right place and she’s with God.” I never in a million years would have believed this.

Myrtle was noted by her neighbors as being sociable, well-dressed, and a dance enthusiast.

“Simply a gorgeous woman. very friendly and soft-spoken. Neighbor Kevin Grayer told CNN station WLS that his neighbor was “always on the go.” Just an upbeat individual. Her personality was fantastic.

“She didn’t deserve that,” Grayer remarked. She was too good a person to pass away in that manner. That is so sad.
