Ecuador took the lead in their opening match against hosts Qatar at the Al Bayat Stadium after Inner Valencia scored their first goal of the 2022 World Cup from the penalty spot.
Valencia thought they had scored in the third minute but an offside call saw their effort ruled out.
It saved Saad Al-Sheeb, who failed to claim Pervis Estupinan’s free-kick, but the Qatari goalkeeper made a mistake bringing down Valencia, who converted in the 16th minute.

Goals:
ECU – Enner Valencia – 16th minute (pen)
ECU – Enner Valencia – 31st minute (Angelo Preciado)
Goalkeeper Saad Al-Sheeb escaped early VAR intervention when he failed to claim a set piece and Valencia headed into the unguarded net.
The Qatari number one couldn’t let it go, leaving referee Daniel Orsato with little choice as Valencia were caught unawares after getting in on Ecuador striker Estrada’s well-weighted through ball.
Valencia waited to send Al-Sheeb the wrong way and his finish for the second goal, an arrow into the bottom left corner, was just as clinical.
Estrada missed his kick when his effort deserved a goal at the end of some excellent work by Gonzalo Plata, the only worry for Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro, Valencia, coming on as the hero on 15 minutes with a knee injury. the time
Substitute Mohamed Muntari fired a late effort into the top of the netting, but Qatar had precious few reasons for encouragement.

Qatar vs Ecuador Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time: Worked for Ecuador, who started with an intensity Qatar couldn’t handle and then closed things out with top-level experience their opponents lacked. Back to the drawing board for hosts.
90th minute: Ecuador fans are excitedly throwing around “OLES” as their team hogs the ball. Qatar will have five more minutes to endure.
85th minute: Muntari hit the back of the defense of Ecuador and struck the ball rounded from the right corner of the penalty’s right corner. That’s good try. It makes waves in the upper part of the netting and thinks in the stadium that is inside. Can Sanchez people set the Grandstand finish?
76th minute: That knee is still bothering Valencia and he decides to call time. Let’s hope there is no major damage. Cifuentes continues for his captain, who has had World Cup outings that have been the talk of his country for decades.
75th minute: The stadium buzzes with excitement as Afif gets the ball about 30 yards from goal. This evening the locals want to see more of him. A predictable shot flies.
70th minute: Ecuador is playing it very calmly. Qatar defended set-pieces with a bit more composure this half. A double change is about to take place, with captain Al-Haydos and striker Ali making way for Wad and Muntari.
62nd minute: A half-chance for Qatar as Miguel manage his run well and catch Estupinan at the back post. He makes a good connection from 15 yards but it’s wide. If Ali had neatly met Al-Haydos’ cross in first-half stoppage time. The hosts will be on the scoresheet.

57th minute: Mendes is booked for a clumsy challenge. That is unnecessary. Ecuador should not pick up yellow cards that could cut them off later in the tournament. They are in complete control.
55th minute: Al-Rawi is dispossessed and Ibarra is in. He turns to his right foot and shoots a good height or confidence boost to Al-Sheeb.
54th minute: This is the kind of South American talent we tune in for at the World Cup. Plata overcoming some challenges in the midfield. He goes down the left but pivots to curl a great cross in behind the Qatar defence. Estrada can only manage an air shot on it. Could be 3-0.
52nd minute: Remember that magnificent cross from Preciado for the first goal. Well, his right boot isn’t amazing. The Ecuador right-back just launched a 30-yard shot that went into the stands near the goal. He’s only doing that because Qatar still don’t look particularly good coming out of their own half.
50th minute: Valencia were trying to win the second ball. He seems to have shaken off some of the bad effects from that knee injury.
46th minute: We’re going back. Ecuador have not conceded in any of their last six games and that missed Ali Sitar was Qatar’s only touch in the opposition penalty area in the first half. A 2-0 lead feels pretty safe, doesn’t it?
Halftime: Big chance for Qatar!!! Ali has a glorious chance to become his country’s all-time leading goalscorer. But he makes an absolute hash of a good cross from Miguel. Qatar started to play some organized football in stoppage time but Ali’s failed effort made the half pointless.
45th minute: Five minutes of stoppage time after that too-long VAR delay after Valencia’s disallowed goal and treatment awarded to Ecuador’s two-goal hero. At this stage, the 2022 World Cup is Enor Valencia’s world and we are living in it.
43rd minute: Oh, it looks like pain for Valencia, who sprained his knee slightly in the challenge. The Ecuadorian captain is undergoing treatment and is on a stretcher. Is this the end of his Golden Boot bid?
40th minute: The highly-rated Afif looks to get something going down the left but he is greeted by a stacked Ecuadorian welcome party. He is disposed of by Mendez.
37th minute: Valencia spins Bodiaf, who fouls him and becomes the third Qatari player in the book. The list of things the home team has done well so far is very short.
31st minute: GOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Valencia!!!!
Who was Enor Valencia for the Golden Boot? Kaisedo drives towards the Qatari defensive line. The ball is worked to the right from where Preciado sends in a delicious cross. Valencia finds a header to meet at the far post, arrowing the ball into the bottom corner. Whether Al-Sheeb is playing as a tournament winner or not, he had no chance there.

31st minute: Brighton’s Caicedo booked. No stranger to yellow cards, the combative midfielder, but that’s soft. Qatar takes the free kick out of the game. They are terrible so far.
25th minute: Much was made of Qatar’s two-month training camp ahead of the tournament. Have they trained more?
18th minute: Another scary moment for Al-Sheeb. You get the feeling Ecuador is trying to keep him as busy as possible.
16th minute: GOOOOAAALLLLLL!!!! valencia (pen)
Now he has a goal. Valencia wait for Al Sheeb to move and they slot the ball into the opposite right corner as you like.
Penalty to Ecuador in the 15th minute!!!!
Valencia streams through the middle of the Qatar defence, Al Sheeb brings him down and it’s a clear penalty.
13th minute: Long wait for a corner as the referee settles some banter between players in the six-yard box. Plata’s delivery is clear at the near post.
10th minute: Estupinan on another free-kick on the left. Ecuador are very good at these and Qatar are not helping themselves. The hosts are clearly scrambling but all hands are pumped for them at the moment. Hassan with a meat challenge in Plata. Now Ecuador has a corner.
8th minute: Despite that huge let off, Qatar are yet to settle down. Another Estupinan ball towards the box, this time from open play, causes panic.
3rd minute: GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! Hang on, No!!!!!
Ecuador strike soon! Valencia make a scene as the man in the spot tries to claim Estupinan’s free-kick by nodding into the unguarded net after Al Sheeb scored in Qatar.
But there is a VAR check and, for reasons not particularly clear, the goal is disallowed. Neither Valencia nor Ecuador’s other players appeared to be offside, initially, but the goalkeeper was so far off his ground he may have inadvertently played an attacking offside. If that is for a foul on Al Sheeb then he is a very lucky boy.
1st minute: Qatar sent a long ball into the Ecuador box from the kickoff but it was dealt with very calmly. Start it!
1 minute to kickoff: The anthems are very well received and we’re into pre-match handshakes. Former West Ham and Everton striker Ener Valencia led Ecuador as captain. He has scored 13 goals in 12 league games for Fenerbahçe this season.
5 minutes to kickoff: That passed without incident. Infantino did not claim to feel Qatari today, which is just as well because there are many Ecuadorian fans. Here come the teams!
8 minutes to kickoff: Oh good grief, Gianni Infantino has the microphone. Goodness knows where it might lead.
20 minutes to kickoff: Here are those two lineups in full. Four of Ecuador’s previous five matches have ended 0-0 and how effectively Qatar is able to bring its ambitions to play good football to bear against a strong 4-4-2 could be crucial to the result.
Qatar (5-3-2, right to left): 1- Al Sheeb (GK) – 2- Pedro Miguel, 16- Khoukhi, 3- Hassan, 15- Al Rawi, 14- Ahmed – 12- Boudiaf, 6- Hatim , 10-Al-Haidos- 11. Afif, 19. Ali
Ecuador (4-4-2, right to left): 22-Galindez (GK) — 17-A. Preciado, 3-Hincapie, 2-Torres, 7-Estupinan — 19-Plata, 20-Mendez, 23-Caicedo, 10-Ibarra — 13- Valencia, 11-Estrada
45 minutes to kick off: Qatar’s first World Cup team!!!! Afif and Ali start ahead!
