Saquon Barkley, the standout running back for the New York Giants, will not play against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. This will be his third straight game missing due to an ankle ailment.

In the early part of practice on Friday, Barkley, who was officially listed as questionable, needed his right ankle to be retaped after being limited last week.

He had previously stated on Thursday that he was “encouraged,” but he did “not want to make any guarantees” about playing in Miami.

During the Giants’ Week 2 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Barkley suffered an ankle injury. The two-time Pro Bowler was projected to miss three weeks, according to sources who spoke to ESPN at the time of the injury.

The Giants (1-3), who have lost their last two games by a combined score of 39 points with an NFL-worst minus-76 point differential this season, are anticipated to keep Matt Breida in the starting running back position on Sunday.

The Giants have already ruled out All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring), rookie starting center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), and guard Shane Lemieux (groin), so Breida will once again be running behind an improvised offensive line.
