The United States and Wales were billed as one of the most important games of the first round of the group stage, but they will have to decide the group later as the 1-1 draw tied the points.
Tim Weah’s first-half opener gave the United States a deserved lead at the break, but the halftime introduction of Kiefer Moore for Wales turned the game in their favor and pinned the United States for much of the second half.
Walker Zimmermann, one of the most rock-solid defenders for the United States through CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, foolishly conceded a penalty 10 minutes from full-time, which Gareth Bale collected in emphatic fashion to level the scores and secure the result.
Overall, it’s a fair result in a game that wasn’t exactly pretty, but was entertaining nonetheless. The end of the match turned chaotic as players from both sides reached the track meet completely exhausted. All in all, it’s a fair outcome that gives both parties a great chance to deserve it while taking care of business.
Both of them left everything on the field in Qatar, as you would expect in a World Cup.

USMNT vs Wales live updates, 2022 World Cup highlights
Full-time: USA 1-1 Wales
Total chaos ends as points are shared. It’s a fair result, as the US made their excellent first half pay off but fell apart as Wales pushed for an equaliser.
Bale’s penalty shared the spoils, and the game ended in wild fashion as all players tired towards the final whistle. USMNT fans are clamoring for Gio Reyna to make an appearance in the match, but he doesn’t show up.
Overall, it’s a fair result, and there’s still a lot to play for in Group B.
90+7 mins: The game has descended into absolute chaos. At one end, DeAndre Yedlin’s cross from deep set up Wayne Hennessey’s punch, and at the other Wales had a chance in the penalty area which was cut out by a crucial Tyler Adams step. At each stoppage, all players place their hands on their knees. Everyone is tired, and Pulisic is limping.
90+2 min: Ethan Ampadu is down and clearly injured. The official stops play for treatment. Players cramping all over the field, it’s a mess out there. Harry Wilson limps off, replaced by Sorba Thomas.
90th minute: Harry Wilson tackles Brendan Aaronson in transition, but manages to avoid a yellow card. It’s mindless from the referee, who should have given a caution there. Unfortunately, Wilson comes off worse for wear as he limps off.
9 minutes of stoppage time shown on the board. Hold your breath, USA and Wales fans!
88th minute: The game is winding down the stretch as both sides play for a late winner. With both sides defending in the last ditch, the ball is lumping across the field. This is a track meet.
Jordan Morris comes in for Tim Weah, a defensive replacement for Berhalter as Morris is the best defensive winger on the team. It’s a big moment for Morris, who is coming back from two ACL tears to reach this moment.
80th minute: Penalty! Wells! Walker Zimmerman takes out Gareth Bale from behind, and it’s clearly a spot-kick. It’s a silly challenge, coming in from behind as Bales turn the goal. There is no need to make that challenge, and it gives Wales a great chance to equalise.

Goal! Wells! Tara takes her moment with gusto! Turner guessed right, and maybe got a hand on it, but it’s Bell’s absolute howitzer, an unguarded laser.

79th minute: Wales replace striker Brennan Johnson with wing-back Neko Williams, a distinctly attacking change from Rob Page. Williams is a depressed man as he goes, muttering to himself and shaking his head.
73rd minute: Chance, USA! Oh, Brendan Aaronson! Great work by Christian Pulisic down the left, and he skirts his defender. Pulisic’s cross is cutback to the penalty spot, and Aronson’s late run is there to complete the delivery, but he whiffs perfectly on the header. Like, 100% miss the ball, swishing your head in nothing but air.
Younis Musah drops into midfield and looks tired with his right leg stretched. A trick may be to get replacements who are waiting patiently on the sidelines. Members are able to come in.
68th minute: The United States have a corner man-up, as Kiefer Moore goes to the sideline after treatment, but it is empty. Pulisic tripped Gareth Bale during the play, but came up limp, and Adams’ ball was deflected into the box.
Berhalter is preparing more options. Kellyanne Acosta, Deandre Yedlin and Haji Wright are all set to come in, with Dest and Sargent likely to come out.
64th minute: Chance! Wells! What saves Matt Turner! At a set-piece, where Wales are extremely dangerous, a second chance produces a free header, but Turner is there to acrobatically tip it over the bar.
In the ensuing corner, Wales came close again as Turner was caught in no-man’s land and Ream was brought down, but it went forward. Big double miss for Wales.
Greg Berhalter makes his first substitution, as Brendan Aaronson comes on for Weston McKenney, who was clearly not fit for the 90-minute game.

62nd minute: With the US pushing forward, Pulisic is brought down in the penalty area, and screams for a penalty. In this match, the referee awards points for goal kicks, which are weak in favor of both sides. It certainly looked like a mischievous challenge, but replays show that Connor Roberts had a light touch on the ball. It’s a big call from the official, which is worth noting.

61st minute: Wales rip two shots, both of which are blocked. It’s going from impressive defense to worrying pressure for the United States. They need an outlet, or think the equalizer is coming.
Adams cuts the passing lane to regain possession, and they recycle to relieve pressure. Greg Berhalter is signaling his team to push forward and push Wales back in the first half.
58th minute: The attacking impetus is now entirely with Wales, as the US retreat into low blocks. They are able to escape the pressure thanks to some excellent one-on-one defending, an aerial duel to clear a long throw and a hilariously bad call by the official to give Wales a throw as they get a clear corner. America is on its toes, and needs something to break the pressure. It may need to be replaced.
54th minute: It’s great defending from Sergino Dest who, while on a yellow card, makes a pinpoint standing challenge to dispossess Wales’ attack down the left flank, allowing the team to clear. The US will need more in the second half to keep out the European qualifiers.
51st minute: Tim Reim trips Gareth Bale on the counter and earns his fifth yellow card of the game overall and third for the U.S. It’s a tactical foul, and Reim knows what he’s doing. The centre-back must be careful in this game and throughout the rest of the tournament to avoid being shown a second card and earning a suspension, although sometimes those are unavoidable.
50th minute: Wales get their third attacking push in five minutes with Moore on the field rather than 45 without. Turner spilled a second successive corner for Wales but was whistled for a foul and the pressure eased.
46th minute: Second half underway. With Kiefer Moore coming into the field and moving into the striker position, Wales have had plenty of options to consider. Standing at 6’5″, Moore will provide an outlet up front when hoping to hit on the counter. He replaces Dane James, so there is no formal change for Wales as they stick to a 3-5-2.
The U.S. earns a corner right on the restart, but it’s again wasted by Pulisic, who shouldn’t be taking set-pieces for the U.S. at this point.

Half-time: USA 1-0 Wales
The United States were the only better team in the first half, and they took a deserved lead through Tim Weah, the first son of the Ballon d’Or winner to play at the FIFA World Cup.
Wales are comfortable playing without the ball, but they were unable to create counter-attack opportunities due to the dominance of the US midfield in the first 45 minutes. It was ugly at times, but overall the US will be happy with how the first half progressed.
The four yellow carded players will have to be careful not to put their team in a difficult position in the second half.
45+3 min: Chris Mepham gets away with the previous one, but not here as he brings down Pulisic and earns himself a caution. A total of four yellow cards for this match, two for each side.
Note: Two yellow cards at the World Cup result in a one match suspension. Sergino Dest, Weston McKenney, Gareth Bale, and Chris Mepham in notice.
43rd minute: Wales have now enjoyed their longest spell of possession in a full half. Trying to build right with Dan James, but it hasn’t come yet. The longest bit of defense America has to do. Anthony Robinson concedes a corner as he gets in front of Aaron Ramsey.
40th minute: Yellow card to Gareth Bale for a tackle on the back of Younis Musah. First caution for a Wales player, third overall this first half.

36th minute: Goal! United States of America! It’s the moment American fans have been waiting for! Sargent’s hold-up play led Christian Pulisic straight into the throat of the Welshman. He sees the race of Tim Weah, who finishes with a toe-poke just ahead of Neko Williams.
Tim Weah scored his first World Cup goal against Wales since Pele in 1958.

33rd minute: Pulisic is fouled as the US fumbles the ball for a while. The U.S. team is outraged that Mepham was not given a yellow card, what was clearly a yellow-card foul on replay. A shoulder barge straight at the US star for no real reason. Pulisic gives the officer an earful and takes his leave.
Although the US has occupied a lot, it has not been able to do anything. This is exactly what Wells wanted.
29th minute: Frustration boils over at the sight of Sergino Dest’s long-range shot that rifles miles over the crossbar. Not the shot America was looking for.
Moments later, however, Tim Weah’s pressure won an attacking-third throw when Hennessy forced it out of play. Big energy from the first son of a FIFA World Cup-winning Ballon d’Or winner.
26th minute: An already slippery game has developed further as both teams are making several mistakes in possession. Tyler Adams comes awkwardly at the Wales midfielder and is whistled for a foul, but avoids caution as he appears to have tripped over the challenge.
The American players, already frustrated by some of the refereeing decisions, are now turning their anger towards the Wales players, who seem to be taking too long to take throw-ins. Can they really waste time in the 26th minute?
22nd minute: Wales are really struggling in possession, as the US shut down their passing options. Kiefer Moore has no outlet up front without a hold-up play.
#WAL need Bale to start acting a bit like Kieffer Moore here. Need a relief point. #FIFAWorldCup

In possession, Pulisic creates a half-chance as he weaves through the Wales defenders, and finds Antony Robinson on the overlap. The show is closed from a tight angle and cleared, but this is another promising moment made by the Chelsea man.
19th minute: The American players are becoming extremely frustrated with Qatari official Abdulrahman Ibrahim Al Jassim and his referee team. Apart from yellow cards, they have contested many throw-ins and corner/goal-kick decisions. The decision-making players are clearly frustrated.
15th minute: Gareth Bale just had his first touch of the game, but it didn’t do much. Wales are good at conceding large amounts of possession. He’s hardly involved, but doesn’t need a high dose to make an impact.
Harry Wilson is struggling in midfield for Wales, going up the field for tackles. He spent most of the Premier League season out with a knee injury, returning to the Fulham lineup only a few weeks ago.
13th minute: Now Weston McKenney picks up a yellow card. Again, definitely a foul, but for this early yellow card, it’s extremely mild. This is very worrying for America not only in the game but also in terms of suspension of the World Cup. Neko Williams is the player to win the foul again.
11th minute: Sergino Dest receives an early yellow card for bringing down Neko Williams on the touchline. It’s a soft foul, as Williams goes down and screams at the top of his lungs, but for this early caution, it’s too harsh from the official.

10th minute: Chance! United States of America! The best attacking moment for either side in this game sees America come so close! First, a two-man break sees a near-own goal go off the head of Joe Rodon, into the heart of goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy. Then on the follow up play, Sargent goes inches wide with his header. Excellent attack!

The @USMNT is knocking early 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/hclRmPZsrQ
6th minute: USA have had most of the possession so far, as expected, but have done little with it early on. They have a corner, and again it’s Pulisic to take, and it’s another poor delivery.
2nd minute: Joe Rodon brings down Christian Pulisic in the attacking third, giving the US a free-kick 30 yards out. A chippy start for both teams, it will be interesting to keep track of the foul count and disciplinary status for both sides.
Pulisic takes the free-kick, and it’s terrific, driven straight at the first man. Pulisic hasn’t been good at set-pieces over the years but continues on set-piece duty anyway.
1st minute: Anthems are done, and we’re working! USA and Wales in the FIFA World Cup! For the USMNT, it’s the culmination of an agonizing eight-year wait. It’s an exciting moment for Wales as they end a 64-year World Cup drought.
All 22 players in the field are playing in their first World Cup. The only player on either side with pre-World Cup experience is United States’ Deandre Yedlin, who starts from the bench.

22 minutes from kickoff: Tactically, these two teams have very different profiles. The United States are built on a high press, while Wales are built on pace and counter-attacking.
The US lineup suggests that Greg Berhalter may be preparing to press less, starting pressing specialists Jesus Ferreira and Brendan Aaronson on the bench. The United States could seek to occupy and break Wales rather than wreak havoc with the press.
No Ferreira, no Aaronson for #USMNT tells me Gregg Berhalter is going to back off the press for this match, understanding that Wales will likely concede large amounts of possession.
— Kyle Bonn (@the_bonnfire) November 21, 2022
This will be about breaking Wales down in the half-court, less need for the press.
35 minutes from kickoff: With just over half an hour to go, this is your last chance to get an inside look at how the game could play out from a betting perspective. I’ve got three picks for you, plus a ton of stats, analysis, odds and more ahead of this Group B game.
USA vs Wales lineup, team news
US manager Greg Berhalter says both right back Sergino Dest and central midfielder Weston McKenney are ready to play, and they both start from the get-go.
Aside from the fitness concerns, there were three other lineup decisions Berhalter was making.
At centre-forward, Josh Sargent has been chosen over previous starter Jesus Ferreira, supported on the wings by Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah. Both Brendan Aaronson and Gio Reyna will play off the bench in the second half.
Walker Zimmermann’s partner in central defense is Fulham defender Tim Ream whose excellent club form has forced him not only onto the roster but into the starting lineup as well. Finally, in goal, Matt Turner is really fit to start in goal despite some injury concerns in the stretch of club games with Arsenal.
USA Starting 11 (4-3-3, right to left):
1-Matt Turner (GK) – 18-Shaq Moore, 3-Walker Zimmerman, 15-Aaron Long, 5-Anthony Robinson – 8-Weston McKenney , 4- Tyler Adams, 6- Yunus Musah – 11- Brendan Aaronson, 24- Josh Sargent, 10- Christian Pulisic
Wales manager Rob Page has decided to go with a 3-5-2 rather than the expected 3-4-3, sitting towering striker Kiefer Moore for a purely pace-based transition attack. Fulham’s Daniel James is intended to partner star Gareth Bale, who will roam the field rather than stick to one position.
Page had already hinted that midfielder Joe Allan would not be fit in time for the game against America. He has not played since mid-September due to a hamstring injury. In midfield, Harry Wilson has been inserted as a creative midfielder, and he will sit ahead of more box-to-box duo Aaron Ramsey and Ethan Ampadu.
Wales 11 (3-5-2, right to left):
1-Wayne Hennessy (GK) – 5-Chris Mepham, 6-Joe Roden, 4-Ben Davies – 14-Connor Roberts, 10-Aaron Ramsey, 8- Harry Wilson, 15-Ethan Ampadu, 3-Neko Williams – 11-Gareth Bale, 10-Daniel James

It should be an interesting game at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium as the United States will look to put pressure on Wales, while Gareth Bale and Co. will look to break through against an American team that is weak in defence.
