In a recent “SmartLess” podcast episode, Taika Waititi declared that he was not interested in becoming a director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director has helmed two MCU productions: the divisive “Thor: Love and Thunder” from 2022 and the highly regarded “Thor: Ragnarok” from 2017, both of which are regarded as some of the best Marvel films. The Oscar winner claimed that since he had just given birth to his second child, he initially took the “Ragnarok” role for financial gain.
“What do you know? Waititi remarked, “I had no interest in making one of those films.” It wasn’t part of my original career plan as an auteur. However, I didn’t have much money and had recently given birth to my second child when I realized that this would be a wonderful chance to feed the kids.
“Let’s face it, ‘Thor’ was probably the least popular franchise,” he added. I never grew up reading the “Thor” comics. When I would open that comic, I would think, “Ugh.” After doing some research, I read one “Thor” comic, which may have been eighteen pages long, or however long they are. This character continued to puzzle me.
In response to the question of whether Marvel executives were afraid to hire him, Waititi said, “I think there was no place left for them to go with that.” Well, they’ve called me in, so this is basically the bottom of the barrel, I thought to myself.
In the end, “Thor: Ragnarok” garnered praise from critics and took in $853 million at the global box office. “Love and Thunder” achieved a record-breaking $760 million globally. According to what Waititi recently revealed to Business Insider, he is pretty sure booked for the next six years, so he won’t be directing any more “Thor” films.
Regarding the directing duties for “Thor 5,” he stated, “I know that I won’t be involved.” “I will focus on these other movies that I have committed to doing. However, I adore Marvel and enjoy working with them. I cherish Chris.
Waititi continued, saying he would never feel as though Marvel was betraying him by hiring a different writer-director for the company’s fifth “Thor” film. We have an open relationship, so I’m cool with them seeing other people if that’s what they want. I would definitely return to bed with them in the future.
Hemsworth stated to Entertainment Weekly in the summer that there is no official word on his return to Marvel. He desires that any prospective “Thor 5” be “unpredictable,” but he also does not wish to take the chance of portraying Thor for an extended period of time that would make Marvel fans scoff.
Hemsworth remarked, “I have no idea what’s happening in the next phase, so I’ve got to be careful how I word that.” There are constant talks. Before anything is formally announced, ideas are being discussed. Officially, though, I’m not sure.
The ridiculous humor in “Thor: Love and Thunder” turned off some Marvel fans. Hemsworth claimed to GQ that the film’s production team “had too much fun” and that “it just became too silly.”
A possible fifth “Thor” film was hinted at by Waititi in the book “‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ The Official Movie Special.”
“What can I do to him now? It must feel as though it’s continuing the character’s development while maintaining a sense of fun and providing him with challenges that feel as though they’re building on the challenges he must overcome, according to Waititi. We can’t possibly have a villain less powerful than Hela, in my opinion. From there, I think we should add a villain who is in some way more powerful.
Disney+ currently offers the ability to stream every “Thor” movie.
