We complimented Little Nightmares II’s eerie atmosphere and deft puzzles when it first came out in 2021. Fans of the first two critically praised games have something fresh to look forward to two and a half years after the last mainline entry was released. Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn, has revealed that it is working on a new Little Nightmares game, according to Bandai Namco. Additionally, we got our first glimpse at Little Nightmares III.
Little Nightmares III tells the tale of Low and Alone, two kids who are stuck inside The Spiral, a collection of unsettling locations. They must cooperate to flee from a danger that is waiting in the shadows. You can still play Little Nightmares III solo with a CPU-controlled partner, but you can also play online co-op with a friend.
The Necropolis is a barren desert terrain with poor visibility where the gameplay demo is set. Producer Coralie Feniello said that it is referred to as “a city of eternal energy and certain death.” The absence of music and the ominous soundscapes give the impression that this is a place without hope or vivid life. When Low and Hope reach a tall building, they climb a steep ladder to enter what seems to be a sort of tomb. Alone has a wrench, whereas Low is in possession of a bow. Each character has a distinctive weapon with a specific purpose. These two weapons can both be employed in very different ways to pave new roads.
Low and Alone must collaborate to find solutions to numerous puzzles because cooperative play is a key gameplay element. Alone must turn a mechanism to lengthen a bridge in one instance, and Low must run across and shot a counterweight with his bow to lock the bridge in place. It appears that voice chat is unnecessary in such a cooperative title because the two characters can speak out to one another and gesture to one another.
They discover a bird holding a key as the two climb higher. Low pulls the key from the crow’s mouth with his bow, and the two move on to the next section of the Necropolis with it. As they proceed, one of the rooms is covered in a huge hand. It appears to be a statue at first, but when it comes to life, it shows that it is actually a part of a huge creature. One of Little Nightmares III’s Residents, known by the name Monster Baby, is this creature. Until they enter a room where the giant is looking through a hole in the wall, the two players advance while narrowly avoiding Monster Baby. The two kids would be wise to avoid being caught in Monster Baby’s terrifying gaze, which appears to be a stone gaze.
The dimly lighted catacombs of Necropolis are subsequently seen in the gaming demonstration. Monster Baby is still causing trouble and breaking down barriers. Low and Alone return to the city after resolving challenges involving huge scarabs and trudging through waist-high sand. The two keep trying to avoid Monster Baby as they move through the city’s above-ground areas, but by the end of the demo, it seems as though they have failed because the huge hand is about to seize them when the gameplay ends.
The first two episodes of The Sounds of Nightmares, a six-part audio series exploring the Little Nightmares universe’s lore, were also shown to us. In 2024, Little Nightmares III will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch.
