Both Uruguay and South Korea squandered chances to take the lead in the first match of Group H and the match ended in a goalless draw.
Hwang Ui-jo, who reached his 10th consecutive final, scored the best opportunity for South Korea in the 34th minute, curling a shot over the bar from close range.
And as half-time approached, veteran Uruguayan defender Diego Godin, making his fourth World Cup appearance, smashed a header into the base of the post from a corner.
Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez also failed to get on the end of two crosses while Tottenham star Son Heung-min, bar one curling effort led by Mathias Oliveira, was a muted presence at the Education City Stadium.
Both of these sides have ambitions to launch a knockout stage bid as they look to steal the limelight from Portugal, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is bound to attract much of the group’s attention.

Uruguay vs South Korea Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time: Uruguay 0-0 South Korea
And it is. One point on the board for both sides. Not the worst result in the world, Portugal and Ghana are among the other sides in Group H. It’s the fourth goalless draw in this World Cup, and I’ve covered them all. hmm…
90th +4 mins: Both sides are still going for it as we enter the final knock, but it’s all a bit desperate and lacking in quality.
90th + 1 minute: And we will have seven minutes of added time. Like that even more. In the first half there was concern that the officials lost their clock.
90th minute: And Son goes close at the other end! A weak clearance from Sergio Rochet is met by the Spurs star, but he cracks a left-footed effort wide of the post.
89th minute: Uruguay hit the post again! Federico Valverde launched a thunderous effort from distance that rattled Kim Seung-gyu’s right-hand post. Unlucky from Real Madrid.
88th minute: A final throw of the dice from Uruguay, sending Guillermo Varela on for Facundo Pellistri.
83rd minute: South Korean drummers in the crowd are playing some rhythms to encourage their side. But do both sides have the will or the creativity to find a late winner?
81st minute: First sign of Edinson Cavani’s physicality as he weaves past a couple of defenders before finding Darwin Nunez, whose curling effort goes wide of the far post.
78th minute: Uruguay also bring on reinforcements, with Nicolas de la Cruz and Matias Viña replacing Matias Vecino and Matias Oliveira.
77th minute: Cho Gue-sung, as a sub, brings down a high ball just outside the area and fires an effortless left-footed shot wide of the right post. nice try
74th minute: Triple changes for South Korea, Cho Gu-sung, Son Joon-ho and Lee Kang-in for Hwang Ui-jo, Na Sang-ho and Yoon Jong-gyu.
71st minute: Son long ball set to go after the forward, but Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet quickly headed out outside his area.
69th minute: Uruguay hogging possession now. South Korea were penned inside their own half, but remained disciplined.
65th minute: It’s Edinson Cavani on, and Suarez off. Little influence from the starting giants. Can Cavani do better?
63rd minute: Diego Godin’s sensational long pass finds Darwin Nunez on the left. He skins Kim Min-jae but after reaching the byline, takes too many touches and Kim Young-gwan turns to take the sting out of his final ball.
60th minute: Uruguay prepares Edinson Cavani for action. You’d imagine that would be the way to make his friend Luis Suarez, 35.
56th minute: While we wait for the game to resume, watch this great skill from Rodrigo Bentanker
55th minute: Son is being treated after injuring his leg in a challenge from Martin Caceres. The Uruguayan defender received a yellow card for his troubles.
51st minute: Son Heung-min creates space for himself in the Uruguay penalty area, but a great block from Jose Maria Gimenez prevents the South Korean star from getting a shot away. Son’s corner is flicked on but Sergio Rochet clears it.
48th minute: Luis Suarez chases a long ball over the top for Uruguay but the veteran striker is flagged offside. Now at 35, the wily forward needs that extra half-second to get ahead of opposing defenders.
46th minute: No changes for either side as the second half continues.
Half time: Uruguay 0-0 South Korea.
45th minute: Just one minute of added time! This is a World Cup record.
43rd minute: Uruguay hits the post! Jung Woo-young does well to meet a dangerous cross from Facundo Pellistri just ahead of Luis Suarez and, from a corner, veteran defender Diego Godin curls a header into the bottom of the left post. Uruguay is close to the goal.
39th minute: In-Beom Hwang tries his luck from distance for South Korea, but he can’t block it. Optimistic from there.
34th minute: Big chance for South Korea! Great play from Kim Moon-hwan but when the cross comes in from the right, Hwang Ui-jo tucks it over the bar. Should have scored!
27th minute: A chance for Uruguay when Mathias Oliveira steps deep inside the South Korean area but with Darwin Nunez out wide, he overhits the outside pass with his left foot perfectly. the poor
25th minute: Lovely footwork from Sun who cuts inside Martin Caceres, but his curling effort is headed over by Mathias Oliveira.
21st minute: Another great ball from Gimenez is picked out by Facundo Pellistri on the right wing and a first-time cross almost goes to Darwin Nunez, but the Liverpool striker can’t get a foot on it. Uruguay threatens though.
19th minute: Federico Valverde created a half-chance for himself by brilliantly controlling Jose Maria Gimenez’s long pass, but hooked a left-footed half-volley just wide of the right post from the edge of the area.
16th minute: A good long ball puts Kim Jin-soo down the left for South Korea, but the ball just goes to the byline before his hanging cross is dealt with by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
13th minute: The pace has slowed after a fairly frantic opening, with both sides trying to play patiently from the back.
8th minute: Na Sang-ho gets to the byline to win a corner for South Korea, but Son, wearing a protective mask after recent facial surgery, doesn’t quite connect with it and it’s wide.
5th minute: Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez is already looking a threat to the Uruguayan, and Na Sang-ho pulls him back with a shirt tug to prevent the 23-year-old forward from escaping.
3rd minute: Screams and cheers from the South Korean fans every time the ball finds its way to Son Heung-min. It’s fair to say they’re delighted the Tottenham star is fit to play.
1st minute: The formalities are over, and we’re underway at the Education City Stadium.
5 minutes from kickoff: Time for the anthem. First Uruguay and now South Korea.
