Both Switzerland and Cameroon will fancy their chances in Group G, with Qatar 2022 set to be one of the most fascinating battles.
Both know they will have their work cut out for them to match tournament heavyweights Brazil, who are expected to comfortably top the pool, but the game could be crucial in deciding who has the best chance of chasing them into the knockout stages.
With three rounds of 16 finishes in their last four World Cups, Switzerland will find chances to repeat or go one better in Qatar 2022.
But the indomitable lions of Cameroon have other ideas.

Switzerland vs Cameroon Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time: Switzerland 1-0 Cameroon
96th minute: That’s it! No time for Cameron. They will surely regret this, but it is a valuable opening win for Switzerland.
95th minute: A chance to end it! Swiss substitute Haris Seferovic dummied a defender and fired left-footed, but a brilliant last-ditch block by Jean-Charles Castelletto deflected it for a corner.
90th minute: Switzerland make their final change with defender Erre Comart replacing Ricardo Rodriguez. We will have six minutes of added time.
87th minute: First look at goal today for Swiss captain Granit Xhaka, who we know can hit them. But his shot went straight at Cameroon keeper Andre Onana.
84th minute: Switzerland is claiming the ball hit Cameroon’s Gael Ondua, but he doesn’t know much about it. There is no penalty. right call Swiss defender Manuel Akanji later picked up a yellow card for a late challenge.
82nd minute: Ryder puts in a dangerous cross from the left in what looks to be a promising break for the Swiss but Cameron gets his body back to head it out for a corner.
80th minute: With all these substitutions the game has lost its momentum. One more Vargas took his leave for Switzerland, replaced by Fabian Rieder.
74th minute: More changes for Cameroon, with Vincent Aboubakar and Georges-Kevin Nkoudo replacing Choupo-Moting and Nauhou Tolo.
72nd minute: Triple substitution for the Swiss. Haris Seferovic, Noah Okafor, and Fabian Frei, while Shaqiri, Embolo, and Sow depart. Will Embolo’s goal prove to be the winner, or can Cameroon equalize?
70th minute: The first change for Cameroon sees Gael Ondua replace Martin Hongla in midfield.
67th minute: Another hairy moment for Cameroon as Anguissa gets to a dangerous cross just in front of Brill Embolo and heads it out for a corner.
66th minute: Great opportunity Switzerland!
Andre Onana puts Cameron in the game! Shaqiri once again drives down the right wing and pulls back a low cross, this time for Vargas who saves his hard shot.
64th minute: Swiss defender Nico Elvedi earns a yellow card for the team after pulling down Chaupo-Moting.
62nd minute: Choupo-Moting looks a little deflated as he reluctantly tries to find an opening before dropping to a team-mate. Switzerland then came out quickly, but Cameroon was quickly back on the attack but Martin Hongla was too isolated. End to end in moments.
59th minute: Chance Switzerland!
It all goes wrong when Vargas steps forward and instead of finding Xhaka, who is free in the box, goes for goal and blasts the ball over the bar.
57th minute: Choupo-Moting picks up Akanji on the byline before trying to squeeze an effort beyond Sommer, but the goalkeeper makes himself big enough to beat the ball behind for a Cameron corner.
48th minute: Gooooaaaallllllll ! to Switzerland (Breel Embolo)

HALF-TIME: Switzerland 0-0 Cameroon
Cameroon had several good chances, but Switzerland had the best chance at the end of the first half. So far the game is good.
45th minute+1: Big chance for Switzerland! Manuel Akanji, on the edge of the six-yard box, rises alone to meet a corner from the left but the Manchester City defender can only glance a header wide of the right-hand post. Big discount for Cameroon.

40th minute: Briel Embolo runs into the Swiss box and almost pulls the trigger but defender Jean-Charles Castelletto makes his tackle perfect. the corner

36th minute: First booking of the game on Cameron’s Collins F. He’s not happy about it, but it’s not his first crime.
34th minute: Cameroon goes straight into attack when Martin Hongla crosses from the right, but Swiss defender Sylvan Widmer does enough to catch Karl Toko Ekambi out of his stride as he tries to get on the end of it.
33rd minute: Switzerland weave some good patterns in midfield, Ruben Vargas releasing Silvan Widmer on the right byline. The full-back whips in a dangerous cross but Cameron clears.
29th minute: More enterprising play from the Indomitable Lions, with Mbeumo playing a one-two with Choupo-Moting before Andre-Frank Jambo slotted in a pass for Anguish, whose shot was saved by Yann Sommer.
23rd minute: Flowing build-up from Cameroon, Brian Mbeumo cuts in from the right flank and beats several defenders in the area. The Swiss are forced to concede a corner, but nothing comes of it.
14th minute: Cameroon is finding a springboard-moting spring at every opportunity and the Bayern striker scores. But Manuel Akanji does enough to keep him off his stride and his left-footed effort lacks the power to trouble Swiss keeper Yann Sommer. Again, a better option might be a pass for Mbeumo in the middle.

10th minute: First chance of the game! Brian Mbeumo runs through a beautiful ball in the Swiss penalty area. It’s a difficult angle but the Brentford player hits a good shot which is beaten by Andre Onana. Eric-Maxim Choupou-Moting was screeching for a pass in the middle…

3rd minute: Xherdan Shaqiri, making his fourth World Cup appearance for Switzerland, starts on the right, but clearly has a license to roam. The 31-year-old is the top scorer in the Swiss team with 26 international goals.

Switzerland vs Cameroon lineup, Team News
Switzerland (3-5-2, right to left)
1. Sommer (GK) — 5. Akanji, 4. Elvedi 13. Rodriguez — 3. Widmer, 17. Vargas, 10. Jaka, 8. Früller, 15. So – 23. Shaqiri, 7. Embolo
Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer picked up a foot injury in early October but played the full 90 minutes in the recent friendly defeat to Ghana. Striker Haris Seferovic, who has proved crucial for his national team in recent years, has struggled for form at club level this season and may have to settle for a place on the bench in their opener.
Cameroon (4-3-3, right to left)
23. Onana (GK) — 19. Phi, 21. Castelletto, 3. N’Koulo, 25. Tolo — 18. Hongla 14. Gout, 8. Anguisa — 20 Mbeumo, 12. Ekambi 13. Choupo-Moting
Cameroon is one of the few teams in Qatar without any notable injuries – and they will hope that luck continues throughout the tournament. Bayern Munich striker Erik Maxime could be key for a Choupoe-moting squad, while Karl Toko Ekambi could be an option.
