According to a senior law enforcement official, the FBI arrested a former top staffer to New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday morning.
It wasn’t immediately apparent what allegations were brought against Linda Sun, who departed the governor’s office over two years ago. Chris Hu, her spouse, was also taken into custody.
Both the FBI and an Eastern District of New York official confirmed the arrests, but they would not comment on the specific allegations. On Tuesday afternoon, the two are scheduled to appear in federal court in Brooklyn.
After FBI agents searched the couple’s $3.5 million house in a gated enclave in Manhasset, Long Island, six weeks prior, the arrests took place.
In September 2021, Hochul, a Democrat, appointed Sun as deputy chief of staff, according to her government bio. She was the administration’s highest-ranking Asian American appointee at the time.
She temporarily worked as a deputy secretary in the state Labor Department after leaving Hochul’s office.
According to an individual acquainted with the details surrounding her exit, she was let go following the discovery of misconduct-related information. The individual, who talked to The Associated Press under anonymity because they were not permitted to publicly discuss personnel matters, said that the incident was reported to law enforcement at the time. The individual refused to go into specifics about the alleged wrongdoing.
