France is hoping to become the third team to defend their World Cup title in the tournament’s long history in Qatar 2022, and they have already made a strong start, becoming the first team to reach the round of 16.
Les Bleus sent a message to the rest of the tournament that despite a number of injuries, they are more than equipped to make a deep run. Olivier Giroud scored twice in Australia’s 4-1 defeat and Kylian Mbappe scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Denmark. With 6 points left in the game, they have qualified for the knockout stage.
Denmark, a Euro 2021 semi-finalist, is still in with a shot at a second knockout round berth, but they need to beat Australia on the final day to secure it. But Australia will be hoping to secure a final berth or even a draw (Tunisia not beating France).
Australia beat Tunisia 1-0 to give themselves a shot at qualification on the final day, leaving the African side with little hope of wrapping up the group stage with a game against the world champions.

The four teams selected in the group will play in a round-robin format, with each nation playing three other teams. Group standings are based on points from those three group stage matches — three points for a win, one for a draw, and any points for a loss.
The top two teams from each group based on total points advance to the single-match knockouts. If the teams are tied on points, goal difference is the first tiebreaker followed by goals. Another set of tiebreakers applies if the teams are tied in those categories.

France
Winners of the last World Cup in 2018, France will be determined to retain the crown, although they will have to perform much better than they did at Euro 2020 when they lost to Switzerland in the round of 16.
It could make all the difference for Les Bleus if superstar Kylian Mbappe is at his best, and Didier Deschamps’ talented squad also has plenty of other international experience.
France beat Spain in the final to win the 2020/2021 UEFA Nations League and if they can perform as a cohesive unit, they will surely be among the main contenders for glory in Qatar.

Australia
On 13 June, the Socceroos finished last in Group D with a single-elimination win over Peru in a penalty shootout. Six days ago, Australia defeated the United Arab Emirates 2-1 in a separate playoff of the Asian qualifiers. Just to earn the right to meet Peru for a spot in the World Cup.
Australia salvaged a qualification campaign that started promisingly (11 straight wins), but which saw defeats to Japan and Saudi Arabia dash their hopes of automatic qualification and force them into the playoffs.
The Socceroos have been a regular at the World Cup since the turn of the century, reaching the competition five times in a row.

Denmark
Denmark could be at the center of one of the most poignant and emotionally charged storylines at this World Cup as they aim to build on an impressive performance at Euro 2020.
That tournament began under dire circumstances, with talisman Christian Eriksen suffering a heart attack during a loss to Finland in Copenhagen. The playmaker thankfully pulled out and in his absence his teammates rallied thrillingly, reaching the semi-finals, where they fell short against England in extra time.
Incredibly, Eriksen returned to play with Brentford in the Premier League and joined Manchester United this summer, having been fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) last year. He is now back in the national team and could, against all odds, shine on the biggest stage again as part of Kaspar Hjulmand’s vibrant side.

Tunisia
Tunisia kept their chances of reaching the World Cup finals for the sixth time alive with victory against Mali in the last qualifying round. The North Africans will be looking to reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Most of the squad is based around Europe, with Montpellier forward Wahbi Khazri their main creator, while Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mezbri, on loan at Birmingham, is a name to watch to see who can set him up for a successful tournament.
The Eagles of Carthage are starting a new era for the 2022 World Cup, under coach Jalel Kadri. Kadri, a former assistant, was handed the top job by the Tunisian football federation in January – replacing Monder Bebayer, who paid the price for a below-expected performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.
