Millions are generated by "The Nun II" to lead the box office

The Nun II’s negative reviews didn’t deter audiences from purchasing tickets, unlike many other horror films before it. The 2018 hit’s sequel, which Warner Bros. launched in 3,728 locations, earned an estimated $32.6 million in its opening weekend in North American theaters, according to the company.

It received a C+ CinemaScore from viewers and a one-star rating from AP’s Mark Kennedy who called it “a movie that appears destined to drive a nail into this franchise’s undead coffin”. However, it scarcely matters because horror is arguably the most critic-proof genre—at least during opening weekend.

Even while the sequel’s opening weekend ($53.8 million) was significantly behind that of the first movie, which was directed by Michael Graves and starred Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid, it was still a strong start. The “The Nun” films are a part of the so-called Conjuring universe, which has produced nine pictures and brought in $2.1 billion at the box office. The sequel did well overseas as well, earning $52.7 million from 69 nations, with Mexico being the highest with $8.9 million. This increased the film’s global opening to $85.3 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, noted that having a horror world is quite significant in terms of its ability to generate income. “Warner Bros. placed a fantastic bet on the horror movie experience never fading.”

Additionally, there are a ton of other spooky films scheduled to be released this fall, like “A Death in Venice,” which debuts the next week, “Saw X,” and “The Exorcist: Believer,” which will be released on October 6.

In its second weekend, “The Nun II” passed Denzel Washington’s ” Equalizer 3 ” for second place. With an additional $12.1 million, the Columbia Pictures film’s domestic and global gross receipts reached $61.9 million and $107,7 million, respectively.

The third chapter of Nia Vardalos’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” which arrives 21 years after the original film became a big sleeper hit earning almost $369 million against a $5 million production budget, came in third place. This is another brand-new film. The third movie, which Focus Features released in 3,650 theaters, made an estimated $10 million. Female audiences (71%) and audiences who were 25 or older (83%), in particular, were heavily responsible for this success.

“Greek Wedding 3,” which stars Vardalos and features a return of John Corbett, was written, produced, and directed by him. Jocelyn Noveck of AP noted in her review that the film, which has received largely low scores, is “like a thrice-warmed piece of baklava.”

Shah Rukh Khan’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Jawan,” an Indian vengeance thriller, debuted in fourth place with $6.2 million from just 813 venues. It was made available in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Khan, a Bollywood icon, also starred in “Pathaan,” another hit movie this year that has earned $130 million globally.

After 8 successful weeks and $5.9 million from 3,281 sites, “Barbie,” which is available on VOD on Tuesday, slipped to No. 5. The domestic gross for the Warner Bros. movie is currently $620.5 million.

Comscore’s projections for Friday through Sunday theater attendance in the United States and Canada. On Monday, the final domestic data will be revealed.
